Pictured above at 5 years.
Below: Kujo was retired and then adopted at four years of age by Gwendolyn Mitchell of Houston, TX where she is now a happy couch potatoe as she should be! :-)

Why that name? Fukumen means "mask" in Japanese. Her mask goes all the way past her ears, which is slightly more unusual; usually the mask stops between the eyes. Shukujo means "lady". She is extremely confident while maintaining prissiness.
A.K.A. We call her "Kujo" or "Kuj" for short which also happens to be the nickname for our home team hockey goalie, Curtis Joseph of the Phoenix Coyotes (during the hockey season Kujo was born in!
Born in Camp Verde, Arizona, bred by our good friend and Long time Akita owner (who also has a pup of ours) David Laxton
Coloring: reddish brown with white markings, black mask and dense black overlay
Kujo wishes she could be the alpha female and her personality reminds me alot of Katana, but Kujo is one of our smallest Akitas and her size just won't allow her to challenge which she is very much aware of, so, she sticks to alarm sounding. Kujo is very much a watch dog. She lets EVERYONE know when Charlie gets home from work or when we get home from going out somewhere, or if there is a dog or coyote nearby, or if Cookie, a abandoned Border Collie that adopted us, does absolutely anything wrong! She likes all of our dogs but doesn't like anyone else's, which is to be expected. Kujo does bark but knows that she shouldn't so she barks and runs so that I can't tell her no! I attribute this to her excellent hearing and the fact that she wants to be the first to sound the "intruder" alarm. She is smart as a whip and figures out how to use her size to her advantage like crawling in places that the other dogs can't get to! It is not unsual to see Kujo in my lap when she settles down. She enjoys her smaller than average size and uses it to her benefit to fit comfortably in the covetted position of "mom's lap" :-)! If she even catches you looking at her, she will take that as an invitation to climb in your lap. She is very active and an extremely fast runner but, even loose, will not run far as she doesn't want to miss anything. Kujos os an avid swimmer and was immediately a fantastic swimmer upon entering the water the very first time! Her compact size and lean body allows her to move through the water easily, even against the current for periods of time and she makes it look easy! She has enough energy to move swiftly for long periods of time without tiring!
Breeding: Kuj . Her puppies definitely take at least half of their appearance from mom as it is quite obvious that they come from her! Besides the obvious family connection based on looks, the pups we have had the pleasure of meeting as adults, quite obviously got her extreme intelligence and also her neediness for constant affection and lap dog status! The boys we met from Kujo were also mouthy just as their mother is! She is an excellent mother, almost to a fault as she will not stop nursing pups and thoroughly enjoys her bonds with her pups and, like many of our moms, will try to steal pups if she hears other mothers in action :-) She has large litters, 9, 10 then 12 puppies and care for them all with ease. Her puppies also tend to be abnormally smart, even for Akitas, and more active than your normal Akita. They are also generally a very agile Akita.
