Tomo's adopter says:
After thirteen and a half years of sharing my life with a wonderful Akita, I lost Basil to old age last fall. I
was determined to get another Akita as soon as possible, but Basil’s breeder had retired and moved out
of state, and there weren’t too many other breeders left in Florida. I considered a rescue dog, but then I
stumbled across the Kabuto website and found just what I was looking for.
I hadn’t really wanted another puppy, and Melissa was advertising Tomo, already four years old and
gorgeous. I emailed Melissa, and less than a month later, on Christmas Eve morning, Tomo arrived.
Under any other circumstances, it would have seemed odd to buy a dog from half-way across the
country without ever meeting her, but Melissa made it a joyous experience. By the time I actually met
Tomo, I had dozens of pictures of her, knew her history, and had been provided with a great deal of
information about her personality. She arrived with a complete travelling kit: food, treats, papers, dog
bed, and instructions. Melissa has been there for me every step of the way, offering suggestions and
giving me tips on how to make Tomo’s transition a comfortable one for all of us. Melissa truly cares
about all her dogs, and when you adopt one, you become part of the extended family. When Basil died,
there was no one to tell – I had lost contact with his people years earlier. With Melissa, I have a network
for life. I know people who have Tomo’s puppies and they are all great fans of my wonderful dog. And
when the time comes to get her a companion dog, it will definitely be from Melissa!Candy Sheppard, Sarasota, FL
Rumor's (JR X Kujo) adopter says:
We recently adopted Rumor from Melissa. Even though it hasn’t been long since we picked him up, he’s already found a place in our family and we couldn’t be happier with him. Melissa was very quick about her responses once we inquired about whether or not he was still available for adoption, and she was very flexible about working around our schedules when we tried to set up a meeting.
Upon arrival to Melissa’s home, she welcomed us right away, Rumor right by her side. He was bathed and brushed and squeaky clean, ready to be presented to his possible new family. And even though the crazy guy undid all of Melissa’s hard work by immediately rubbing himself in the dirt, the fact that she took the time to get him ready for his first impression showed me that she truly cares about the future of each and every one of her dogs.
Melissa let us take the time to sit with Rumor and get to know his silly personality and she explained little personality traits about him that have been helpful for us to know in the time we’ve had him. She takes pride in raising these dogs, she knows their history, their parents, even the names and locations of the other members of the dog’s litter.
It was no hard decision for us when we decided to take Rumor home with us. We were immediately in love with him. And once we made the decision, Melissa gave us all of the basic things we’d need to know – what to feed him, where to get the food, what kind of treats he enjoys, and she even gave us a little personalized bag with some food, treats, and toys for our newest furry kiddo, which again showed that she had taken the time to make up this little Take Home package for him.
We’re so incredibly happy with our decision to take Rumor home. He loves to play with his toys and wrestle with our other dogs. And he’s a huge bed hog. J After hearing so many things about how ‘dangerous’ Akitas can be if they’re not brought up correctly, I am happy to report that Rumor was definitely brought up the right way, all due to Melissa’s love and care for her dogs. That loving upbringing he had shines through in his personality and his interaction with our other dogs. If/When Melissa decides to begin breeding again, we would definitely go through her for our next puppy, no doubt about it!

Voodoo's adopter says:
Voodoo is doing just great! She is a wonderful member of our family now. She and Skeeter play all the time. The cats even rub up on her legs. :) She loves water. I take her with me to the barn all the time. She hangs out while I ride and chases lizards. She loves a bath and smells good all the time.
It was like she was meant to be a Faircloth! Thank you for bringing her into our lives!

Angel (Rumor X Kiku) and Justice's (Po x Voodoo) adopters say:
In July of 2010 we lost our male Akita one week shy of his 6th birthday. We have had Akitas for 25 years and while they were all loved as treasured family members - Peli passing away so unexpectedly hit us unusually hard. As devastated as we were over our loss; we didn't realize the huge hole it left in his sister's heart. When we were ready to get another puppy we searched nationwide. While admittedly we found a lot of good breeders - Kabuto Akitas and Shibas won us over in the end. Aside from the fact that Melissa produces beautiful Akitas, it's her philosophy that really was the game changer. She believes, as we do, that the world is a better place because of these beautiful creatures and when you let a dog into your heart - they enhance your life tenfold. Melissa not only espouses this philosophy but she lives it too.
In May of 2011, we acquired a beautiful male Akita puppy from Melissa. He and our beloved Ciara (Peli's sister) bonded and soon became joined at the hip. Unfortunately, we lost Ciara in Sept. 2011. Though we were absolutely beside ourselves with her untimely and unexpected passing, we didn't want Justice to feel lost like Ciara had when she lost her brother Peli. We immediately called Melissa and, as luck would have it, we were able to purchase a 7 month old female Akita named Angel from her. We felt we were already acquainted with Angel as we follow Melissa on Facebook and from time to time still go to her site. Long story short; we couldn't be more pleased with our new family member. Angel embraced us and Justice as we have her.
Once again we believe that this was due, in part, to Melissa, a breeder who truly loves her dogs and it shows in everyway. Melissa realized the pain we were in and she helped ease the pain by going to great extremes to make it possible to get our Angel overnight. What is also very admirable is the fact that not only is she a breeder but she does a very noble thing in rescuing Akitas. Needless to say, we highly recommend Kabuto Akitas and Shibas.
Sincerely,
Michael and Virginia Quinones

Gnarly's (Yuki X Kymora) adopter says:
Kabuto Kennels is an amazing kennel if you are looking for a strong, healthy, active Shiba Inu or Akita. The owner Melissa is a kind, caring woman who not only does an outstanding job at breeding, but also cares deeply for the pups she breeds. My recently added Shiba family member, Gnarly, has been a joy that I would of otherwise missed out on if it weren’t for Melissa’s kennel. I highly recommend her for either breed, knowing first hand how she portrays herself both in the business aspect, as well as the breeding aspect. She takes the time to both know you and know your pup. She always gives her best to answer any questions or
give any advice she can in a quick and prompt manner. Everything is up to the highest standards with all paperwork and nothing is left undone. You will not be disappointed with your newly found pup. 5 plus stars to Kabuto Kennels, they are truly what they claim to be, an outstanding kennel.Ricky Henne, Mesa, AZ
Amana Clover's (Po X Voodoo) adopter says:
My family is what I would call "Akita Lovers for Life". Growing up I was always captivated by the breed, and when I was 21 I was finally in a position where I could get my first pup and experience the breed first hand. It was everything I ever dreamed it could be, and so much more.
I've always been a dog enthusiast, growing up I have lived with, owned, or associated with all kinds of breeds ranging from Great Danes, to Chow Chows, Huskies, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, German Sheppards, Pitt bulls, your occasional yappy Chihuahua ... You name the breed, and I could tell you one I've handled personally. Out of all the breeds out there that I've experienced, my first Akita was by far the smartest, most energetic, most charismatic dog I have ever had the pleasure of spending time with.
He was my baby boy, my world, and at age 6 he was stolen away from me due to a severe case of VKH syndrome. To this day we talk stories about him, and at times would still pretend he was around, and if you imagined hard enough you could almost hear him "Awoooooooof!" at you or you'd swear he'd come charging around the hall corner to great you with slobbering kisses. Needless to say a sort of emptiness came with his passing.
Primo died in 2007 and since the first day I laid eyes on him I knew I was an Akita fanatic for the rest of my life. After his illness however, I knew a reputable breeder was a must for me. I needed to find someone who had some proven lines, and a legitimate background for breeding strong healthy dogs, a person who cared about and respected the breed as much as I do.
With that said, I've probably been internet stalking breeders for years! I've known about Melissa's dogs for quite a while, and about a year ago I finally contacted her regarding my interest in getting a pup.
I wasn't really ready for one at the time, I just wanted to make the connection in the event that later down the road I decided I was ready for a pup. Time passed, and I'd frequently catch notice of the various litters that would come and go, but it was never the right time for me.
A few weeks back I received an email from Melissa, asking if I was interested in a 4 month old baby girl. The dogs original future owners' circumstances had changed, and they no longer could take her ... she was in a sense, an orphaned pup.
Naturally the thought of getting another Akita thrilled me. That idea, another Akita, finally, made me resemble a child in a toy store, my excitement could not be contained. Circumstantially it was the perfect time for me to finally get a dog, I had plenty of time and energy to devote to a new pup, my only down fall were finances were a bit tight.
Melissa however told me that she cared more about finding a good home for the baby girl, and that everything else we could work out. After a day of getting things in order, I picked up the puppy from Melissa, my second Akita pup! ... and we named her Amana (ah-mah-nah), meaning faithful/loyal.
She is everything I could have asked for. So full of life and so loving. I was amazed at her temperament too, every dog she has met since leaving Melissa's Akita Compound, has been greeted with kisses and a wagging tail. She hasn't been timid, shy, or aggressive to any person or animal since I've had her. She's so well behaved, I was amazed. She's smart and a quick learner, and has all the traits of an Akita that I remember.
Amana has brought back a spark of happiness that only a dog can bring, not just to me, but to my family and my friends ... everybody loves her, and I only have Melissa to thank.
Melissa respected my needs and wants, and hooked me up with the perfect pup at the perfect time. She also cares about our well being after the fact, and frequently checks in to see how we are doing, making sure any of the questions or concerns I have are answered.
I'll definitely be coming to Melissa when I'm ready for another dog, after all ... Amana will need a friend or two :)
eWhat a wonderful experience!!! I already have two Shiba Inu's, both males. The older one is ill, and I had been looking for a female shiba for several months. Both of my shiba's are adopted; one from the local shelter and the other was bought from a pet store and after a month the owner claimed he was too hard to handle. He was very alpha, not aggressive but assertive; I learned very quickly about the breed, and thought a puppy might be a better fit.
I filled out an application for a puppy, and received an immediate response from Melissa, reading she had a female available within the next few weeks. I read the contract thoroughly and completely, and made a deposit on a puppy. Melissa kept in contact with me over the next few weeks: sending me photos, asking me if i had any questions or concerns, and arranging a pick-up date and time. Her directions to the kennel were complete and exact; coming from Las Vegas I had no problem at all.
I brought the puppy home; and she is sweet, even-tempered, confident, curious, well handled, assertive, and such a joy! Melissa did a phenomenal job in the first few weeks of this puppy's life; she is so well adjusted. I can caress her paws, and she doesn't mind at all. Kabuto Kennel is a small kennel, and obviously she cares more for each and every dog she has and has placed than than any profits, however small that may be.
The next time I consider another dog, she will be the first I contact!
Thank you, Melissa!Yvonne Anderson, Las Vegas, NV
Sake's adopter who is using her as a hearing impaired therapy dog says:
I first ‘met’ Melissa by e-mail where I was exploring getting an Akita. I explained to her my family; an aging Akita/Chow/Shar-Pei 14 y.o. female, a 2 yr old Rough Collie, Registered (Lassie type dog) who is also a female, and my “token” male neutered cat. I have a fairly significant hearing loss and the aging dog has been my hearing dog for her 14 years, but she is now going deaf and has arthritis in her hips. I am afraid she will be seeing the Rainbow Bridge sooner than later. I was looking for a dog that would not bark except when I needed to pay attention, would be leery about people around me and my home, yet one that would behave around people. My collie was to be my hearing dog, but collies are so friendly and are not the least bit leery around people—they are all her friends. I explained all of this to Melissa and we continued to e-mail and getting to know each other. I was impressed with her knowledge of Akitas and she knows the temperament of her dogs. She wanted to be sure I knew what to expect from an Akita. I was looking to get a puppy and she thought she had one that would fit my needs but at the last minute she told me about her and Ben’s 6 year old retired female, SAKE, whom she felt, after thinking about it, would be a better fit. I drove up to Phoenix to meet Sake and the puppy she had in mind. As cute as the puppy is, I feel in love with Sake. She was and is such a gentle giant and before we left, Sake took a treat from me which I understand is unusual for her to take a treat from a stranger. She also enjoyed her ice cream cone that she got on her ride to her forever home. I didn’t need to be leery of introducing her to my girls as they all got along right from the beginning. I am so glad that I went with Melissa suggestion and considered SAKE, even though she was not a puppy.
Finding the RIGHT home and the RIGHT dog is important to Melissa. She wants to know about the family make up and how one (or more) of her brood will fit into that family. She knew SAKE needed to have other dogs around to be happy and I knew my collie would accept her. I think Muffin accepted her because she was so gentle, not threatening, and not aggressive.
When I was at Melissa’s she introduced me to her other dogs. I was impressed that she knew little tid-bits of information about all of them that someone would only know if they paid attention to them in a “personal” manner and not just as a business. I have asked her dozen of questions and she doesn’t seem to mind and is prompt in answering them.
Anyone who is looking to adopt from Melissa I would first tell you to be open and honest with her on the information that she asks. She loves and cares for her dogs and wants them to be happy and she wants you to be happy with your dog(s). Ask her questions, even small ones that seem minor to you because they are important to her and her ability to suggest the best Akita for you.
Thank you Melissa and Ben, Sake is a welcomed, loved member of my family.
Susan B.
Because of safety issues for me, I will only give you my first name.
Marimiko's (Oki X Kota) Adopter says:We're very grateful that Melissa (and Kabuto Kennels) was the breeder we chose to work with to bring home Marimiko, our new female Shiba puppy.
Melissa was very helpful from the first phone call we had with her, answering our questions, and giving advice (and encouragement) about how we might go about bringing Marimiko into our family, especially relative to our concerns about how she'd do with our 18 year old house cat. Given that Mari is our first family dog, Melissa's responses were very helpful as we considered the decision.
Melissa was very responsive in communicating with us once we'd decided to adopt a puppy, and was great about sending us "pupdates" with new pictures posted on her Facebook pages. Putting together all the pictures is obviously a lot of work, but it's really nice to see the pups as they grow up a little bit, and it really helped keep everyone's enthusiasm and excitement up while we waited for the email to actually schedule our "puppy pickup".
We've had Mari for about a week now, and its amazing what a smart, energetic, and happy puppy she is! She had no problem fitting into our family here, and is very sweet and well behaved. While we're not super-experienced dog owners yet - it's pretty obvious that Mari came from a loving environment where she was well cared for, which makes for a great foundation for us to build on. Thanks Melissa for a great experience, and a great dog!

When we were considering purchasing our third Akita, we did a lot of asking and searching on the internet. We were very impressed with Kabuto Akita's Website and the knowledge and love for the breed it provided. There was no doubt that this breeder was wonderful!I am so happy that I decided to purchase an Akita from Melissa Harper at Kabuto Akitas! Our family previously has owned 2 Akitas in the past 18 years. We love the breed and it is obvious that Melissa does too! We had "Wasabi" shipped to us when she was 8 weeks old. In comparison to the other two dogs we have had Wasabi has an outstanding temperment. She is very calm, easy to train and wants to be around family constantly. Wasabi is a very lovable and loyal puppy. We were looking for a great companion puppy and we found it!I am amazed at how calm and lovable Wasabi truly is. I asked Melissa how she accomplishes such a wonderful temperment and she explained that she handles each puppy daily and gives them a lot of attention. I get weekly emails from Melissa asking me if I have any questions and how Wasabi is doing. Melissa has demonstrated to me throughout the purchasing process, the shipping process, and now the acclaimation process that she is dedicated and loyal to her Akitas. I no longer consider her just a breeder, she has become a valued friend! If you are considering purchasing an Akita or Shiba from Kabuto Kennels you do not have any worries, you will find this a positive and rewarding experience!Sincerely,Linda MesrobianFresno, CAMy Adoption of Baxter experience.
My story begins like this, I wanted a Shiba Inu so I kept looking in petfinder and other areas but with no luck. One day I found a beautiful Shiba Inu and immediately contacted the owner. The owner explained that she had a much better match for me and this was to be Baxter. We emailed back and forth, Melissa who was Baxters mom, constantly and immediately. My questions were answered no matter how silly they were. Melissa wanted me to understand everything and be perfectly comfortable with my choice in Baxter. By the time I went and picked up Baxter I knew him very well and was totally comfortable with him. Melissa knows each of her dogs intimately, it is amazing. She knows all of their habits, how they will react towards any given situation. Her dogs are socialized both with people and other dogs. I believe Melissa has a very special way with dogs, something very rare to find. She loves them and wants only the best for them , during their home with her and once they have left to their forever homes. She can be trusted 100%. Also being one of her friends on face book can lead to many hours of happiness.

I would 1st like to say Thank You sooo much. I have gotten 2 wonderful dogs in the past month from you a boy from Kiku x Rumor named Sarge and a little girl Po x Yoshi named Audi. You made the whole experience a great one. You answered ALL questions and provided great information about the breed. You kept all your patience thru us switching puppies and probably 100's of emails. Both puppies came to us almost completly potty trained and VERY well mannered. I was very surprised and happy. As a breeder you provided all medical records, AKC paperwork and instructions. We will ONLY be buying our Akitas from you from this point forward! I have no compliants what so ever. Both puppies are in excellent health and very gorgeous. So thank you for all you have done and thank you for bringing these 2 beautiful puppies into our family. Keep on doing what you are doing because your a great breeder with beautiful puppies as well as dogs!! Thank you again!! I look forward to the future with our 2 puppies and a new friend....

Kari's Adopter says:
Our home was shared by an Akita for over 10 years so, naturally, when we lost our old friend and companion, we decided to find a new friend. This search led us to Melissa and a four year old white Akita, Kari, who was looking for a family to adopt. After a few phone calls and e-mails, our new family member arrived and we couldn’t be happier. One major issue for us was that our new friend be gentle enough to be around our grandchildren who range in age from 7 down to 16 months. Our grandchildren have all met her and love her as we do. She even gently scolds them when they play too rough with each other. She even gently scolds them when they play too rough with each other. Kari loves to go for walks, hikes and riding in our Toyota 4-runner. Everyone we meet says how beautiful and sweet she is.
We have visited Melissa’s property and have seen the great care that she takes with all of her “fur babies”. It is no wonder that her pups and adults are so well adjusted and socialized. Kari has been with us nearly three months and we have seen her gradually adapt to her new environment. Melissa was very helpful in explaining the process and everything she said has come to pass. I wouldn’t hesitate to
adopt another Akita from her or to recommend her to friends and family.

Akina's (Dan X Voodoo) Adopter says:
Our family adopted an 8 wk old Akita puppy from Kabuto Akitas a few months ago. We found Kabuto through a Google search and we were very impressed from the beginning. The dogs are beautiful and Melissa, the owner/breeder is very passionate and knowledgable about her dogs. The first time I spoke with her she flat out asked me why we wanted an Akita and what we knew about the breed. Though initially slightly taken aback, I knew that it was because she is thoroughly concerned about where her pups wind up, which is one of the marks of a legitimate breeder. After being approved to purchase, we came to visit and check out the dogs and puppy we were thinking about adopting. We were greeted at the fence by 15 or so very calm, alert & intelligent (and gorgeous to say the least!) Akitas in all different colors. There was no barking, but they were definitely checking us out. Melissa brought out a tiny 8 week black girl pup, placed her in our arms, and we fell in love. Melissa brought out her dad, "Dan" who was outgoing, friendly and sweet, and oh-so-handsome and it was all over, and the pup became one of our family members. Her name is Akina, and she is just an awesome, healthy, smart, adorable, sweet, mellow little ball of fun! We couldn't ask for a better puppy, nor a better puppy-acquiring experience. We are in touch with Melissa regularly, and know she is always there if we have questions, need help etc, and that is comforting. If (or should I say when), we adopt another Akita (or Shiba Inu), he or she will definitely come from Kabuto Akitas!

Kujo's Adopter says:
Kujo loves the kids, especially the youngest one. They have a bond that none of us have. However, I haven't figured out is she is protective or not. She is friendly with everyone. But, I THINK she responds to my moods. That is, if I am accepting of someone's being around, she is just fine with it. I kind of sensed that on two occasions that she was not sure and was different with her response, not violent, but reserved until she was confident about how I felt about their being there. She did growl at a guy that came to the door about two weeks ago. In fact, I had to restrain her until I felt comfortable that she was O.K.
She's not territorial though. When the repairmen and maintenance men come to the house, she if fine with them working around her, even if I am not there. She even plays with them. So...... the verdict is still out as to what kind of watch dog she is.The only person she barks at is me and other dogs. She barks whenever my truck turns the corner to come home, and she barks at other dogs being walked along the street in front of the house. When my daughter drives up, she starts whining and jumping around (she is happy), until they finally come into the house. Then it is on. She loves my daughter and won't leave her along until she pays attention to her. Once that two minutes is done, she is fine to go on her way. But until that occurs, we can't have a peaceful conversation. My daughter even told me that if anything happens to me that she will take care of Kujo. That is the first time she has ever said that about any of my dogs. As you probably can guess, we are all in love with her, and she is in love with us. Thank you for her!Gwendolyn Mitchell, Houston, Texas
Miki's (Oki X Misty) Adopter says:
It’s been such a pleasure adopting my first Shiba Inu from Melissa. She is very knowledgeable and caring toward the dogs she raises and breeds. I met her first when she was delivering a puppy Akita named Saki to her new parents. Seeing the pup Akita so healthy and her new mom so excited I instantly knew Melissa was a breeder I wanted to explore. I looked up her website and was impressed to read the numerous extremely positive references left by previous adopters. I also took time to watch the online videos posted and read the backgrounds of the dogs she has which in turn furthered my interest and confidence in her pups. When I finally made my decision to adopt, I contacted Melissa in whom she responded quickly and professionally. If you want a breeder who is not only good at what she does but provides a professional demeanor I strongly suggest Melissa. I had my chance to visit her facility and home in which it was all a positive experience. Melissa allowed me not only to meet Miki my pup but his parents and brother. I enjoyed this very much as I had the chance to see how full of life they were. She made me feel comfortable and confident in my decision to adopt from her. When the time is right I will be adopting another Shiba from her again.

Neiko (Oki X Misty) and Mia's (Oki X Kota) Adopters say:
We couldn’t be happier with our new family members “Neiko and Mia”. We started searching the web for a male Shiba pup and came across Melissa’s website. We were lucky to be located so close to her. I contacted Melissa by phone and we had a very pleasant conversation about Shiba’s. We took delivery of our little boy “Neiko” (Red Male) a few weeks later. Melissa kept us up to date with lots of pics prior to even delivering “Neiko” to us. We had told Melissa we were interested in two Shibas and gave her a deposit on a future female. A couple of days later, Melissa offered us her keeper from one of the litters. Knowing we would be looking for a Red Sesame female, and that she probably wouldn’t get that color in the next breeding, she offered us her own little “Mia”. We are so happy to have these two little ones who are just 4 days apart. Melissa has been great to work with and very easy to contact through phone, email, and even Facebook. We are happy to have her there as a very knowledgeable resource as we raise our new family members and as a friend…..Thank you very much Todd, Stephanie, Meagan, Cole, Rajah, and of course Neiko and Mia.

Bella's (Dan X Voodoo) Adopter says:
We adopted our first puppy Bachi from Melissa and were very happy with her availability and depth of knowledge about the Akita breed. Bachi came to us healthy, social and the exact dog we were looking for. Based on that experience we went back to Melissa for our second puppy and again we were more than pleased. She worked with us to determine a good litter to choose from and the right puppy from that litter that would be a good fit for Bachi and our lifestyle.
Melissa was patient with us as we took our time and was prompt with pictures, information and transport once we made our decision. Bella came to us healthy, social, playful and beyond adorable. She is a great fit for Bachi and as before Melissa stays in contact to answer our questions, provide us with information and to share photos.
We have recommended her to many people who compliment our puppies during our walks and will continue to do so as Melissa is not only a dog breeder, but a dog lover who gives gifts of furry love to families.

Cheyanne's (Po X Kari) Adopter says:
Melissa has been a great pleasure to deal with through the entire procedure of bringing home baby girl Cheyanne. When my husband and I first started talking to Melissa we were looking to purchase a male long coat Akita almost 2 years ago. We did not choose one of Melissas Akitas at that time but kept in very close contact through emails and chatting. We would talk about our male Akita that we had purchased from another breeder. Some things we weren't told by our pups breeder at that time was very well explained by Melissa even though the pup was not one of hers. As Dakota got older I decided I wanted a female Akita of my own.Dakotas breeder had a beautiful female that I had decided on. She became show quality and the price went up so we said nevermind. Meanwhile her friend who was also a breeder had a long coat female available so we put a deposit on her. When at 6 weeks of age her brother became ill and passed away of unknown cause. We were told by our vet to not go through with the purchase. We cancelled the contract. My husband and I were chatting with Melissa and told her what had happened. We had no intentions of " trying again" My husband and I were going through the Tons of pics on Melissas site whn we came across tiny all white polar bears and fell instanly in love. Melissa wasn't looking to sell both of her white girls. As the hours passed that night and night became morning Melissa agreed to let us have one of her polar bear babies. We had paperwork done and the deposit in the mail by the next day. That night one of the white polar bears became Cheyanne. Melissa has been there every step of the way. I have tons of pictures of Cheyanne from birth until the very second she was left at the airport. We will never go to anyone else for an Akita or Shiba. Melissa made a very sad day into one of the happiest days of my life. Cheyanne is beautiful and very well socialized. Melissa is a very dedicated "mommy" to her pups and will be there from birth until the end! If it wasn't for her I wouldn't have Cheyanne because I had just about given up hope. From the bottom of our hearts....THANK YOU MELISSA!
Zeke's (Dan X Katana) Adopter says:
Oh boy is this dog a handful. I just got home from work and even with Mike home, two girls “supervising” him, a crate and a pen in our kitchen/living room he has chewed off both corners of our cocktail table. I know I know we were warned of the 100 pound termite. J We have also hired a trainer who comes four days a week for a few hours each day to help train him while Mike is working at home.He is so cute though and we love him. Ever since we got him Mike sleeps on the couch so he won’t be lonely-he has such a pitiful yowl-sounds like his heart is just breaking! Both his ears are up now. We have a new nick name for him “the wooly bully”. He is so stubborn and will do almost anything to get his way. He bullies the kids and me but not Mike. He just started using the doggie door last week and he is loving it. The only accidents he really has are on his mat-outside the cage. He’s been to the vet twice and is happy and healthy. I love to cuddle him when he is sleepy-he’s a big cuddly bear then. Another one of his favorite things is to chase around an empty plastic gallon water jug. He goes ballistic and attacks it and flies over it almost doing summersaults. It is so funny to watch and it tires him out. It’s super noisy but so worth getting that tireless energy out. Thanks again.

Koda and Shelby's (Dan X Yoshi) Adopter says:
I have to start out by saying, we couldn't find any reputable breeder near San Diego but we were scared to reserve a pup outside of our state. We saw your website and decided we had to talk to you. You spent over an hour on the phone with me assuring me that I would get good quality puppies. Next step, we drove out to see your adults and be sure I could trust you before putting down a deposit. We absolutely fell in love with your dogs. Their temperaments were fantastic and you were transparent about the process that we felt we couldn't go wrong with you. Although, you had 2-3 litters going on at the same time, you still found time to send us pupdates and pictures every couple of days.
A few weeks after Yoshi had her pups, you informed me that the female (Shelby) we would be getting looked as though she would be a long coat Akita. I had never heard of long coated Akitas so I didn't know what to expect but you gave me the information you knew about their personalities and showed me pictures of a long coat you'd had in the past. Sharing your experience and knowledge with us, we decided to keep Shelby and we are thrilled that we did! She is super cute and so much fun! Shelby and Koda are in good health and are having so much fun with their new family. We can't get enough of them :)
We wouldn't go anywhere else! You've found friends in us forever and we'll be back for more..........guaranteed!

Tokie's (Dan X Yoshi) Adopter says:
I wanted to take some time to let you know how much I have appreciated all the time you put into creating a wonderful experience in getting our beautiful Akita, Tokie. He is exactly what I wanted, and more. He is so smart and loving.
From the moment I spoke with you on the phone, I knew I was going to get a puppy from someone who really cared about the complete well-being of these wonderful dogs, and then I met Tokie’s father, Dan, and I was sold. I noticed that all of your Akitas were so calm and content, that is exactly what I was looking for.
Once committed to getting a puppy from you, the anticipation began. The pictures of Brook and Yoshi, the moments after they were born, and the many pictures and updates of his growth and development were so much a part of getting to know him and anxiously awaiting for the day he would join my family. I can’t even tell you the appreciation I feel for the many, many, helpful e-mails of information and tips about how to plan for a puppy, prepare for the day I picked him up, and what to expect. I am also grateful for your willingness to help me with questions and to provide suggestions since bringing him home. All of the things you did and still do have made this a joyful and memorable experience.
I have had nothing but compliments about his overall health, behavior, and personality, and of course, appearance. I can’t stop taking pictures of him, laughing at his antics, and just enjoying his existence.
Your love of these magnificent dogs shows in all you do. I take great pride in telling people I got him from Kabuto’s/MacLeod’s kennel.
Thanks again,

Bachi's (Dan X Tomo) Adopter says:
We have wanted a dog for 3 years and took our time to research the breed and various breeders across the nation. My husband followed Akitasdemacleod for 2 years before contacting Melissa to inquire about getting a pup. We loved the background of Dan and Tomo and decided to get a pup from that litter. From filling out the application to our wonderful puppy Bachi's arrival Melissa was available to answer all of our questions, kept us involved in the birth and weaning process, informed us of resources and things to look for and do with our new puppy. We are more than pleased with not only our puppy, but also the professional and pleasant process that we experienced. We will definitely, and with confidence, refer all of our friends and if we ever get another puppy we will only get one from akitasdemacleod!Malik and Michelle Perry
Kissaki's (Dan X Tomo) Adopter says:
Kissaki is shaping up to be an awesome dog! And more then just a dog, my eyes and ears when I am asleep or away, the guardian over my wife and children when I'm on the road. I feel so blessed and am so fortunate to have Kissaki. I was unsure which dog to pick, but when you told me she was your fave I told my wife "this woman breeds Akitas because she is trying to better the breed, these dog are her business and she knows her business well. If she favors this dog then this one must be the cream of the crop. " I believe I was right, this dog amazes with every turn. chinook (the queensland heeler) is getting old and ready to retire, pass the baton so to speak but a better replacement there is none.. Living in the city I need a dog who is alert, intelligent and courageous. Kissaki is all that and then some. Truly a fascinating animal. My guardian, my eye and ears when I am not near, my heart of hearts to protect everything dear. Thank you Melissa, thank you for doing what you do.
Saki's (Dan X Tomo) Adopter says:
To anyone interested in adopting an Akita from Akita’s de Macleod,
We have a big, healthy, happy, and energetic Akita pup from Akita’s de Macleod. Her name is Saki and she is 15 weeks old. She looks a lot like her dad (Dan) and his sister (Asia) but there is definitely some of her mommy (Tomo) there too! Saki is so precious and I can’t tell you how wonderful Melissa was during the adoption process. We had decided to adopt even before the litter arrived and it seemed an eternity before we could take her home. The saving grace was Melissa. She was so good about sending photos of Saki and the rest of the litter – In fact, It got to the point that the very first think I did each morning – before work – was check our inbox. Melissa was amazing, she kept us informed not only with pictures, but also told us how the pups were progressing, and reminded us about preparing for the pups arrival at home. She always responded to our questions or concerns and not only gave us answers but explanations. You can really tell that Melissa loves her “furfamily”.
We had never adopted an animal from a breeder before and had been considering adopting a large breed dog. I really thought that I wanted an Akita - but my husband and I had not been around the breed much. So, we made arrangements with Melissa to visit and meet her adult Akita’s. We wanted to see what we were getting ourselves into before we adopted! We instantly fell in love with Dan - he is such a lover! We had some concerns about some of Melissa’s expectations – particularly the requirement to send pictures on a schedule and throughout the life of the adopted pup (We had trouble regularly taking pictures of my 2 sons while they grew up!) We compromised, I am sending photo’s at least until Saki is fully developed but we agreed to leniency in the schedule (I actually love to share Saki’s pictures with Melissa so that Melissa can see how big and beautiful Saki has grown).
If you are thinking about adopting an Akita, we highly recommend Akita’s de Macleod. Melissa has exceptional knowledge of the Akita breed, provides personalized service as the pups grow while you are waiting to bring the pup home, and is willing to compromise.
Thank you so much Melissa – we will keep in touch!

Zeus's (JR X Kari) and previously Shylo's (Dan X Tsunami) Adopter says:
Once again, thank you so much for all of your help and communication with regard to the adoption of our “not so little” Zeus. He is absolutely adorable and HUGE! We’ve had Shylo (our female pup) for about a month when we picked up Zeus and we couldn’t believe how well they played together despite the 4-1/2 week age difference. We were a bit nervous about taking on 2 Akitas but you put our fears to rest and now we are so glad we did. Shylo and Zeus are best buddies now and I’m sure they are happier dogs than they would have been if they were “only pups”.
As I stated before, I can’t recommend Akita’s de MacLeod highly enough for anyone in search of that perfect Akita companion (either puppy or adoptable adult). I’m convinced that you will not find a more caring or knowledgeable breeder anywhere this side of Japan! …And we’ve talked to quite a few of them.
Thanks again for everything and we will certainly stay in touch.
Sincerely,
Don & Victoria Brent, Surprize, AZ

Felon's (Dan X Aisu) and Warlock's (Dan X Tsunami) and previously Saiko's (Cheeto X Tsunami), and Maiya and Kuma's (Duke X Voodoo)adopter says:
Melissa,
We wanted to send you a new referral without echoing things that we and others have already said. Anyone considering an Akita should consider our view.
Originally, we adopted 2 puppies (Kuma, Maiya) from ADM. Less than a year later, we get another puppy (Saiko). We still can’t make it a year without more puppies. Our most recent addition is 2 more puppies (Warlock, Felon).
We do not breed or show our dogs. They are simply part of our family. Living in Pennsylvania, we could have found a source for Akitas closer to home by the locations on some map, but no breeder can be closer to you than your phone and/or your computer.
Akitas de MacLeod has ALWAYS been there for us and will continue to be our breeder and friend. We couldn’t be happier with our Akitas or ADM.

Ula's (JR X Kari) Adopter says:
I'd been wanting to get an Akita for some time, looking into rescues and breeders. Doing research on the breed and fell more and more in love with Akitas. I came across Akitas de Macleod and looked at EVERY page, EVERY link. I decided she was the breeder for me when I read so many happy new Akita parents had come from her and was especially pleased that Melissa wanted to be a part of the dogs life for the lifespan of the adopted Akita. Since the beginning of the process Melissa has been nothing short of amazing. She would update me on my puppies status and send new pictures as she grew. Since getting the puppy she's been so patient with all of my questions and I am so happy with little 'Ula! 'Ula is a gorgeous spunky puppy and I know she is going to grow into a beautiful companion. I feel so lucky to have stumbled across her website and know that I will be back for another Akita in the future! Thank you so much Melissa!

Koma and Ace's (JR X Kari) Adopter says:
We can't thank you enough for the great experience in the adoption of our "kids"!! You went over and beyond with the communication and education. The love that you have for your Akitas shows in them, Koma is such a BIG love bug and so mellow and Ace is very well behaved for a puppy. We brought them home 2 days ago and they are already the best dogs we have ever had...I'm sure we will say the same a year from now. Although we traveled pretty far to pick them up it was worth every mile! Im also thankful for the "lifeline" that you provide after we get them home...your one of a kind! I will definitely recommend you to friends and family and already have!!

Luna's (JR X Voodoo) Adopter says:
We, as a family would like to thank Melissa MacLeod for allowing us to give one of her babies a home! Luna is amazing as a part of our family. Melissa made the adoption process easy for us and answered all of our questions. The paperwork that came with the puppy and all medical records are very thorough and gave good insight to my Vet. I would definitely recommend her breeding services to anyone who is seeking their forever "best friend." I also love the fact that I can see Luna's family on the website and follow her siblings as well. Thanks for everything!

Shylo's (Dan X Tsunami) Adopter says:
Thank you so much for all that you have done for us with regard to adopting our new canine treasure “Shylo”. The level of customer service and communication that you provide is outstanding! Also, the love you have for your dogs and the breed is evident in every aspect of your operation and Akita’s de MacLeod is truly a credit to the breeding profession.
I would highly recommend you to anyone seeking a quality, well cared for Akita puppy or adult dog in need of a new home. Your dedication to both the dogs and to the education of their new owners is something all breeders (for any type of dog) should aspire to.
Thank you also for the dozens of “pupdates” over the weeks that Shylo was still with her mother. By the time she was ready to come home, we really felt like we had watched her grow up. It was as if she was already part of our family!
As long as you choose to breed Akita’s, we wouldn’t consider going anyplace else when it’s time to add a new four legged member to our home.
Sincerely, (Proud parents of Shylo and extremely satisfied customers)

Shogun's (JR X Kujo) Adopter says:We would highly recommend Akitas de Macleod! When we began looking for a breeder, it was important that the breeder be upstanding and care deeply about the Akita breed. Melissa Macleod exceeded our expectations. We emailed her after browsing her website and she immediately emailed back answering our questions. We felt comfortable that she was the breeder for us who really cares about Akitas and wants to make sure her puppies enter into healthy, stable families who will care for the pups properly. She is always there for you every step of the way and the pupdates she sends makes you feel like your pup is a part of the family before the pup ever arrives. After the pup arrives to their new home, Melissa keeps in contact to make sure everything is ok and she remains there for you as a new adopter. We’ve never experienced such care from any other breeder and we appreciate the outstanding communication from Melissa. We will definitely adopt from Melissa again in the future!! Thank you to Akitas de Macleod!!-Stephen Milonas & Kristen Frantz , Peoria, AZ
Nina's (Dan X Aisu) Adopter says:
We are happy to recommend the services and assistance given to us by Melissa MacLeod. Melissa was always professional and down to earth with continuous communications and helping us through the process of selecting our newest family member, Nina.
Since we had never used a breeder before we did not know what it would be like; however, after the communications began, a comfort level developed and the process of adoption was not only easy but enjoyable with great expectations. All expectations were met and a delightful, healthy and intelligent Nina arrived at our house. Nina is not only perfect, she also watches TV!
Now that we have worked with Melissa MacLeod, we would not hesitate to recommend her and her services.John and Marybeth Wolf :-)

Taichi's Adopter says:
To Whom It May Concern:
I adopted an Akita on Aug. 29, 2009 from Melissa Macleod of Akitas de Macleod. He is 2 y/o and his name is Taichi. He is a very special fellow and I couldn’t be happier with choosing him.My experience with Melissa has been great from the first visit to meet Taichi to making arrangements to pick him up on Aug. 29th. Taichi had been given all of his immunizations, had an AVID chip and had been neutered just as Melissa said he would.
Melissa has remained in contact with both by e-mail and telephone to be certain that all has been going well with Taichi over the past two months.
Taichi has settled well into his new home and has become my best little friend. I am forturnate to have found him and am grateful to Melissa Macleod for allowing me to become his owner. I highly recommend Melissa to anyone who is willing to take on the responsibility of owning an Akita. She is honest and of the upmost integrity. She loves Akitas as do I and is so devoted to her dogs. I consider myself very lucky to have met her.

Buddy's (JR X Toey) Adopter says:
Looking back at this last week, I think the best part of this adoption has been the communication. There is a great deal of uncertainty, when you are adopting a 10 month old dog, from 700 miles away. Melissa's continuous emails, photos, descriptions, and videos, of Buddy, not only gave me a clear picture of him and his personality, but gave me a chance to fall in love with him before we even met. That first night, she emailed back and forth with me for over 6 hours, and 63 emails! I could see that this was not just a dog for her, it was a member of the family, and she was just as concerned that he was going to a good home, as I was in getting a great dog.
Buddy is gorgeous boy, and his personality was just as described, TOP NOTCH! Mike and I think he's a Golden Retriever, trapped in an Akita body, I've never met an Akita that was so friendly, and easy going.SOOOOOO, After a full day with Buddy, the one question I still can't answer is WHY those people gave him up??????
The ride home was perfect, he sat and watched out the rear window a bit, snacked on his chew bones, and slept most of the way. Every once an a while, he'd wake up, lean over the seat and lick the back of our ears, have a few rubs, and then it was back to sleep. We made a couple of stops along the way to stretch our legs, get him some water, and rest. At every stop, there was someone to say how beautiful he was.
The biggest worry I had was how long it would take for him and Lucy to get along, that fear vaporized within the first couple of minutes. As planned, we took them both on lead, for a walk up the road, but they kept tripping us, trying to play, so we just brought them back to the house, and let them loose. They were off romping and playing for 20 minutes, and have been pretty much side by side since. Lucy's tail hasn't been up this much since Bear died. She's very happy to have a companion dog again. Right now, they are out in the yard together, exploring. OOOPS, no they just came in the back way, guess it's time for another after breakfast nap.
Last night, he had me in stitches. The picture of the snack tray I'm sending you, is a table in our living room. Buddy was standing in front of it, poking it in the nose, trying to get it to play with him.
I got him a training collar last night, and we'll start working on leash training today. He is very strong, and I'll have to get him to learn how to heal before he gets any stronger. I'll also see if I can set up the truck, and have Lucy teach him how to get in. I know it's not a question of him not being able to jump in, he's just thinks that being given a leg up is the way.
OH, by the way, you didn't tell me he snores LOL. We didn't crate him last night, since they were getting along so well, that we didn't have to separate them. He slept at the foot of the bed, with Lucy beside him. He's almost as loud as I am, POOR Mike.
Anyway, all is going very well here. He's just a big ole happy guy, and so are we.
HUGS,
Bill Otterbein, New Mexico
Ryu's Adopter says:
I MET MELISSA THROUGH HER WEBSITE ABOUT A TWO YEARS AGO. I WASN'T LOOKING FOR ANOTHER AKITA AT THAT TIME. AFTER CHATTING WITH HER FOR AWHILE I FOUND OUT MY FEMALE BRINDLE/PINTO WAS FROM HER FRIEND'S KENNEL- "TRI-R" IN MO.
WHEN I DECIDED ABOUT A MONTH AGO TO GET ANOTHER AKITA OF COURSE I THOUGHT OF MELISSA. I WASN'T SURE I WANTED TO GO THROUGH THE PUPPY STAGE AGAIN SINCE MINE IS 6 YEARS OLD. SHE HAD TWO AKITAS UP FOR ADOPTION AND SHE SUGGESTED RYU. AFTER A FEW CONVERSATIONS WE FIGURED OUT RYU WAS A COUSIN OF MY FEMALE, JEWELZ. HOW COOL WAS THAT? WELL- I DECIDED TO ADOPT HIM AND I GOT TO TELL YOU , IT WAS A LITTLE INTIMIDATING BRINGING A 3 1/2 YEAR OLD MALE INTO A HOUSE WHERE A 6 YEAR OLD FEMALE RULED THE ROOST. MELISSA MADE ME FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO TRY IT AND AFTER SOME TRIAL AND ERROR IT WORKED OUT.MELISSA WAS THERE EVERY STEP OF THE WAY TO GUIDE ME THROUGH MY NERVOUSNESS. RYU IS AN AWESOME DOG, VERY LOVABLE AND WELL BEHAVED. I THOUGHT HE MIGHT BE BORED AT MY HOUSE, HE HAD HIS OWN FEMALE HAREM AND ALL THOSE DOGS TO PLAY WITH. HE HAS LIVED WITH MELISSA AND CHARLIE FOR ABOUT 2 1/2 YEARS. I CALL HIM "RYU-SKYU" LIKE HIS MOM, SO HE WON'T GET HOMESICK.I CAN ASSURE YOU, IF YOU WANTING TO ADD AN AKITA TO YOUR FAMILY MELISSA AND AKITAS DE MACLEOD IS THE PLACE TO GET YOUR PUPPY/DOG. SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING ABOUT THE HEALTH AND BEHAVIOR OF AKITAS. SHE WILL BE IN CONTACT WITH YOU WHENEVER YOU NEED HER.THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE MELISSA, AND I CAN'T WAIT FOR YOU TO MEET JEWELZ!!RHONDA J. BAIRD

I'll try to get more pictures for you soon. I just want to let you know what a good job you are doing for the Akita breed. Everyone that comes to are house falls in love with Makito. Sweetie's (JR X Katana) adopter says:
Akitas de Macleod is the best! Melissa knows so much about Akitas it's insane! Every time I have a question I just give her a buzz and I get my answers. I purchased my pup (Sweetie) less than a month ago and every time I take her walking I get compliments like "that's a beautiful dog" and "wow she's is huge!". Nothing is more priceless then to see their jaws drop when i tell them she's only 4 months. The next pup I get will definitely be from Akitas de Macleod. You'd be a fool to go anywhere else.

Duke's adopter says:
My experience with adopting Duke has been great one. Seeing as I am all the way in Victoria, BC, Canada I was worried about trying to adopt a dog so far away (scams, fraud etc.), but when I saw Duke and contacted Melissa I instantly fell in love.
Melissa was VERY informative and efficient in her responses to me about Duke that I couldn’t help but trust getting things started. Once he arrived in Seattle, he was everything I had expected, with all good, great and the more challenging traits! Duke is definitely how Melissa described him and he is a sucker for attention. The most difficult part of his adoption was actually from the customs officers!!
Adopting a dog at 3 years can be risky, especially if you haven’t had the chance to meet it and have a feel for its personality. The thing I appreciate the most from this experience the quality in which the dogs are treated. I have dealt with many fostered and adopted dogs and this is far from it. Upon arrival you receive a dog that has been loved and treated well its entire life whether it be puppy or full grown. If you are EVER thinking of acquiring an Akita then doing it through Akitas de Macleod is the only way to go. You get the support you need before during and after the adoption. I am truly happy for having found people who will be caring about your new pet as much (if not more) then you ever will!
Although Duke is settling in very well you can tell he misses his home.. but then again, who can really blame him! !! Thank you, for helping me get everything I want.. and a whooole lot more J

Kumo's (Sumo X Kujo) adopter says:
Hi Melissa, hope your having a great summer. We have been so busy. Kumo is doing great and still growing. He is now 100 lbs and my husband is very happy. We both didn't think he would be that big and still has more skin to grow into. He also has a great big head that sometime looks to big for his body, but I am sure he will grow into it. Kumo sure is everything we hope for. He love kids, people and other dogs. Everywhere we go people stop and ask what kind of dog he is. We have never run into another Akita, but Kumo has lots of dog friends. I can't thank you enough, we love Kumo soo much.
Keep up the great work you do

Adopter of Tenshi (JR X Kita) and Haiku says:
After our two Akitas passed away within weeks of each other we started looking for a breeder that we felt understood the breed and the problems that they can have. After looking and talking with several sources we found Akitas de MacLeod and Melissa MacLeod. We looked at Tenshi (he’s on top) and fell in love with him. We Picked up Tenshi from Melissa at her vets after a final exam. I think it was harder for her to give up one of her own, then it was for us to start over with a new puppy and all the chaos that comes with. Melissa called and checked up on her dog (still calls) several times over the next couple of weeks. After Tenshi settled in (took over) Melissa called and said we might be interested in an older dog that was available (seeing as we had enough of the puppy madness). Haku (she’s on the bottom)is 1 ½ years old and has been another blessing. Tenshi and Haku both are healthy and even tempered dogs.
Both our vet and trainer have been pleasantly surprised by the way Melissa cares for her dogs (as if they were her own). Getting dogs from Akitas de MacLeod has been one best experiences we have had dealing with breeders of Akitas. After all they aren’t just dogs they are a member of the family and Melissa’s love for her dogs and the breed in general shows in every aspect of her business. I would recommend to anyone looking into getting an Akita to talk to Melissa and see if it’s the right dog for you or not.

Nitro's (Duke X Koma) adopter says:
Over the years we have had three Akita’s, we lost our beloved Jazmyn and Tuffy just a within a 6 months of each other. Once our hearts begun to heal we wanted to get another dog. We thought about going with another breed but always came back to the Akita; knowing what great loyal and good -natured dogs they are. After seeking out several breeders online, none responding to email, phone, etc. we ran across Akitas de MacLeod. After talking with Melissa, we knew this is whom we wanted to get our next puppy from.
Due to unforeseen circumstances we brought our male puppy “Nitro” home with us at just 5 weeks old. Needless to say, we were extremely nervous but Melissa assured us he would be fine. He was already eating and drinking on his own. She called several times to check on him. She was right he is doing fantastic! He cries at the door when he needs to go out. He is very lovable, playful and extremely smart. Melissa has always kept us updated with emails, pictures and videos. She is always available for questions and she truly cares about her dogs. If you scroll through her references you can see for yourself that she breeds very high quality and beautiful looking Akitas. We know we have one too!
We would recommend Akitas de MacLeod to anyone looking for an Akita.

Adopter of Tomo (JR X Kita) says:
Just recently came to Arizona to pick up my second Akitas de Macleod Akita. Melissa, besides being the most knowledgeable person I know about Akitas, cares so much about her dogs. Her heart must be huge as each and every puppy she has, she hand cares for and loves. My newest pup, Tomo, is no exception to that rule. Melissa treated him as her own pup as he was growing up, sending me daily photos and updates. And I know she does that for each and every pup she has. She just cares so much and breeds the finest Akitas I have ever seen. Everyone always stops me and notices my first Akita from her, Takara, always saying how beautiful and unique she is, and I know I will get the same comments on my newest pup Tomo. He is such a pleasure and so smart! I run a doggy daycare and boarding facility out of my home, and all my clients just rave about my ADM pups! And Takara loves running around with the pack, which I was told by other breeders that I could never do with an Akita. But Melissa assured me her dogs were very social and would do well with this environment. Melissa is honest enough to tell you about each of her pups temperaments and what environment would be best for them. She truly cares and loves her dogs, this is not about money, this is about breeding quality, beautiful and loving Akitas. I can't say enough about Melissa and her dogs. I have had the privilege of meeting many of her dogs and they all are extraordinary and very well loved!! I would not hesitate to recommend Melissa to anyone interested in an Akita pup.

We are writing this letter while our Akita puppy is sleeping on the cool tile floor that she so enjoys here in sunny Arizona. We sure love her and she is perfect for us! She is everything we were hoping for and wanting in an Akita and then some. When she was just four weeks old we went to Akitas De Macleod and met her for the first time. We could feel the caring spirit then that Melissa has continued to show through the new home transition. We brought her to our Vet this past week and she was given a excellent bill of health. We think Melissa is a very special breeder, one whom we would highly recommend to anyone looking to give an Akita a loving home. Our very beautiful healthy puppy came micro-chipped, which our Vet said was rare for breeders to include. She had shots and we came home with worm medicine and a toy that she adores. Also we and our Vet were given a copy of her medical which they stated they had never seen a breeder do before. Our Vet praised Melissa as a breeder several times. The photos and videos of our puppy were so fun to watch, they came almost daily...We hope you choose Akita De Macleod for your puppy as we did for ours....This recommendation comes with our stamp of approval!! Thank you Melissa for being the sweetheart you are, we so much appreciate all the effort and hard work you do for Akitas and other dogs as well...God bless you with good health and many years of successful breeding, with this being the work you so obviously love and are very passionate about. We have learned so much from your website and it is fun to see all the beautiful puppy pictures too.....

Adopter of Kelsey (JR X Kita) says:
Thanks so much! Kelsey is doing very well. She's a very sweet girl and loving the clicker training already. Everyone where I work loves her, (even those who don't like Akitas!) and she's settling in very well. Thanks again!...She is very responsive to the clicker training. Most 8wk old puppies I've taught have almost no attention span, and they don't really retain things very well. It usually takes weeks to get them to connect the dots and figure out what behaviors are reinforced. I've really just been playing around with her with it, but the focus and intelligence she has are amazing. The clicker is just a communication tool that lets the dog know what you want. I've worked with a lot of adult dogs that have never shown me that level of focus. She is very special. She has a very promising future in rally-o. Thank you so much for giving her such a great start in life. Now I get to enjoy her!

I was over 50 ft standing among her newly planted Fruit trees. I used all the zoom my camera could muster to catch these shots. Since she takes Parvo season very seriously we could not enter the house or get close to the yard with the largest group. Her method to prevent anr outbreak of Parvo is working so there were no complaints here. I just love sharing this rare situation that is the normal way of life for Melissa. With all the Akita people I know, she is the only one that can do this with this many dogs and bitches in this huge play area. There are some that were not raised there so they are strategically placed around the perimeter of this main enclosure. Just as this flower blooms in the dry heat of AZ, so does this kennel, where in this most unlikely of places you can find the Akitas blooming as fabulous ambassadors of the breed thanks to Melissa and Charlie of Akitas de Macleod.

Bella is doing great! She is learning where to go to the bathroom – I bet only a few more days and we’ll have that licked! She isn’t enjoying the crate at night, but I know that will get easier with time. She fits right in. Our Boston Bull seems to have taken on the roll of big brother playing with her and leading her around. He even jumped in the crate to sleep with her the first night. We bought her a little blow up pool since she keeps sticking her paws into the water bowl. She is hilarious with it. She climbs in carefully (it only has 2 inches of water) and then starts slapping the water with her paws. She even laid down in the water and got a look on her face like “this is the life”! We have found that shoes are her weakness and my daughter sacrificed one so Bella could have her own to chew on. She has brought many smiles to our faces. Thank you for a wonderful family member.

Ninja's adopter says:
Dear Melissa-
We are so pleased to have adopted Ninja from you. She is everything that you described. She is a really sweet girl, affectionate and well mannered. As you know, she joined our family of 2 tweenage girls, a Newfie male, 13 month old puppy and after the death of our 12.5 year old Akita female. She has been such a great addition to our family and has taken over the guard duties that Akai had. She is very alert and watchful but has a wonderful disposition. My older daughter loves how dainty she is and loves to take her for walks. She is such a lady, especially compared to our 145 lb puppy, but is totally capable of holding her own in a wrestling match! She arrived in good health with all of her shots and veterinary care up to date and in order. Our vet has examined her and finds her in good health as well. Again, we could not be happier with her and if we were ever to adopt again, we would definitely contact you. We will keep you in mind for referrals should anyone that we know be interested in an Akita. You know that this is my 4th Akita and Ninja is definitely as wonderful as my first!
Best Regards,

Lily's (JR X Kita) adopter says:
After searching for months in the newspaper and looking at “backyard breeders” I finally looked online and found Akitas de MacLeod. I was skeptical at first but after looking at the site and references I thought I would talk to Melissa and see what her program was about. I was floored about how much she knew about Akitas and the fact that she returned my request for information within 15 minutes. I found my perfect Akita (my third) and then before I knew it I picked her up. When I picked her up Melissa and Charlie were extremely helpful in showing me Lily’s parents and answering any more questions I had. After seeing Lily’s parents I then realized that the pictures on the website do not do them justice. They look even more spectacular in person! On the drive home Melissa also called to make sure Lily was handling the drive ok. Again this is not something most breeders do, but it is what sets ADM apart from the rest. After seeing Melissa’s concern for the wellbeing of the dogs I realized that she is not a typical breeder and someone that she has a spot in her heart for our “dot girl”. A great experience and highly recommended!
Thanks for the addition to our family.

I bought a female Akita from Melissa. It was the greatest experience ever. From day one I became part of the "family". I got daily updates and pictures, it was great, and something I very much looked forward to. I got to watch my puppy grow and develop.
Melissa is very, very thorough in making sure I knew all that is required to raise an Akita. She makes herself available 24/7 if I ever have any questions or concerns.
Melissa went above and beyond what I would have ever expected from my first breeder experience. I look forward to many happy years with my little Bella.

To anyone thinking about owning an Akita: I own an Akita puppy ("Lady") and she's truly lived up to her name. Raising her has been a joy and an experience. The MacLeod's made the seemingly daunting task of raising a baby Akita well worth it. Melissa is an exceptional resource. Lady has undergone a very fast learning process, as the essential dietary, bathroom, and other behavioral habits have been unusually seamless in training. To anyone on the fence about owning an Akita, I completely encourage you to do it through the Macleod's. While the responsibility should not be taken lightly, it couldn't be any more easy when knowing that you are going through the process with a passionate breeder accompanying you along the way. Lady is still a pup, but I am confident that the decision I made in wanting to raise an Akita bears invaluable gifts for a dog lover like myself. The transition may have not been as enjoyable and full of hope had it not been for the Macleod's.

To Potential Akita Owners:
I am the proud owner of two [2] Akita puppies which I recently received from MacLeod Akitas. I have been the owner of multiple Akitas since 1984, but this was the first time I was involved in obtaining puppies via information over the Internet and dealing with an out-of-state breeder.
I could not be happier with the puppies and with Stanley and Melissa MacLeod. I completed the information/application form and received an immediate response from the MacLeod's. As the process progressed, it became abundantly clear that the Macleod's were involved in Akita breeding so as to "better the breed" and not for financial reasons.
Melissa answered every question I had concerning the new puppies: feeding, caring, vet issues, airline transportation, etc. I received weekly updates (actually almost daily) with photographs and videos of the puppies. The Macleod's thought of everything: from requesting the puppies be given a name as soon as possible so they could become accustomed to being called by "their" names upon arrival at my home, to crate-training the puppies (the puppies have not had an accident in the house). I was notified of the puppies' vet check-up's and was emailed when the puppies were placed with the airline, so I could track the dogs as they traveled from Arizona to Florida. Melissa was available for my frequent telephone calls to her, and if not, always returned my telephone calls the same day.
Anyone thinking of purchasing an Akita puppy from the MacLeod's would be making a great decision. The puppies were perfect: I had my vet perform a wellness-check on the puppies upon their arrival and the vet was very impressed with the breeding, temprament, and physical condition of the puppies. The entire process was a positive, incredible experience.

In reference to purchasing an Akita with "Akita's de Macleod" This is my first time buying a Baby Akita from Melissa. We have Tito and he is doing fantastic my husband and I are so happy with him. So lovable, so playful, he always happy....I have been wanting to thank you so much for all your help and always checking to see if he is OK....We receive Tito at 7 weeks old and Melissa has kept in full contact with me either by email or phone. I am so please that she has sent pictures prior to picking up our new baby. Not to mentioned she has had him house broken at 7 weeks, I knew this was going to take time to train him. Melissa did all the work I just continue waking up three and four times a night to take him out and make sure he goes potty.. When he is done he runs right back in side to his warm bed and falls asleep...I give allot of credit to her working with all the pups....We also have a 13 year old Akita and she is getting very old now...I am definitely going to buy another puppy from Melissa...Thank you so much again, just for being there for us.

Baku has been so much fun since we brought him home! His favorite toy is his stuffed bunny. He plays with it nonstop and then passes out in "his" corner in the kitchen, or crawls up onto the couch and sleeps in his spot there. He even explored (our daughter) Jessie's jeep this morning! He is such a sweet puppy, and we have all grown to love him in the short time we have had him. If we ever decide to get another Akita we will be going through akitasdemacleod again! They are not only willing to answer all questions about the puppies they breed, but are willing to take time and help with problems concerning other pets in the family too. They are wonderful and loving dog owners/breeders

Cheeto and Yori's adopter says:
Melissa:
First, I must say that Yori and Cheeto are exactly as you described them to be from how they look and what their 'personalities' are like. Just like you indicated upon their arrival..Yori was at first shy and Cheeto 'curious' ...soon, after our initial introduction and hugs they warmed up to me , my son Dave and my daughter, Alexis. You have your dogs down to an EXACT SCIENCE at what to expect and how they will be. My worries over them being aggresive and hyper were immedietly put to rest! I couldn't ask for better behaved and loving dogs. Only days into their new 'forever' home and they are loving and delightful family members. As far as my 'phobia' about 'will they eat my furniture or pillows?' or will they 'bark for no reason' ? or, better yet, "will they pee or have accidents all over my house"? NO. I am so very surprised. (especially since I am no novice to owning large dogs of other breeds) I couldn't be happier. They didn't wake up in the middle of the night and no accidents whatsoever.(and again, just like you'd told me..didn't even bother to chew up the slippers or boots. (yay) they have their own toys and it is so funny to watch them play!) EXTREMELY WELL BEHAVED and loving. You only hear them give a bark if someone they do not recognize comes around. AGAIN, just as you'd indicated. You are SUPERIOR in your knowledge and raising of the AKITA then many of the others I've researched and I would highly suggest YOU and Charlie to anyone looking into ownership of this fantastic breed as a loyal family member! They will not be more pleased! ( I know I am and my kids ADORE them). So far, everyone who has had the opportunity to 'meet' Cheeto and Yori have been amazed at how great they are! What a pleasure. You did a great job, shipping was easy and again..just as you said: Cheeto can be found 'perching outside on the log out back' and Yori is a 'prim and proper lady who loves to 'walk not run' .. it's amazing how even the tiniest of details you've given are exact with them. Temperament: AWESOME!!! I Will be passing on your website information to any and all. Thank you again! and again. We are so very happy. NO WORRIESThe Fehr Family , Avon, NY

Hiro (Sumo X Toey) and Akira's (Sumo X Kujo) adopter says:
I recently purchased my second akita puppy from Melissa and Charlie at Akitas de Macleod. I highly recommend Melissa as breeder and would not hesitate to purchase another pup from her (in fact I know I will in the future!). My older pup, Hiro, is almost a year old now and I could not be more pleased with how he has turned out. Not only is he a beautiful dog, he has a wonderful and stable temperament. We get comments all the time like “I have never seen such a beautiful dog” and “wow, he is so friendly for an akita.” Akira, now five months, is just as wonderful. She is extremely smart, confident, and very affectionate. She turns heads wherever she goes and charms everyone she meets. My vet has been thoroughly impressed with her and he told me my dogs make him want to get an akita.
In addition to producing beautiful and balanced dogs, Melissa has been everything that a good breeder should be. Even before I purchased either pup, she spent hours through email and over the phone talking to me and educating me about akitas (I have lots of questions!). Once I decided to purchase both pups, I got pictures practically every day and updates on how the pups were growing and developing.
Akira was flown to me at the end of December, 2008. The flight went smoothly and I was able to ‘track’ Akira from Arizona here to my home in Oregon. She arrived in perfect condition. Since Akira’s arrival, Melissa has remained in close contact with me to ensure that she was healthy and adjusting to her new home and big brother Hiro. In addition, Melissa has spent hours helping coach me on how to live with, train, and care for akitas. As a first time akita owner, this has been invaluable. It helps so much to be able to call someone with so much knowledge and experience. I really appreciate that I have never felt that I am bugging Melissa or asking dumb questions (even though I’m sure sometimes they are). Melissa truly loves her dogs and pre-spoils every puppy before they set off to their new homes. In conclusion, I highly recommend Akitas de Macleod and would be happy to talk to anyone wanting to hear more about my experience with this breeder.

Our first Akita We purchased a brown brindle akita (Josie) from Akitas de Macleod (ADM) just after Christmas last year and from Day 1 she has been a joy to have. Melissa has been there every step of the way so far when I have called her with questions and concerns over Josie. We love her so much, we are getting another (Jake, handsome white/brown pinto male) from them, to be shipped to Chicago again very soon. She treats the puppies as her own and is very much concerned w/ their welfare not only when they are in her care, but after they leave. I very much recommend a puppy (or adult akita) from ADM. The parents have good temperaments and they are quality dogs all around. Overall, I have been very happy w/ the experience (and of course our puppies) and if you do your part and take good care of your Akita, you will also.

Best Akita Breeder!!! I have purchased two akitas from Akitas de MacLeod. I have had 2 rescue akitas, and just love the breed. When I decided I wanted another akita, I knew I had to find the right breeder, as my needs are specific since I run a doggy daycare and boarding facility, the dogs have to be social. Melissa knows more about the breed than anyone I have spoken to, and these dogs are her life. She loves each and every one of them. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone considering purchasing an akita.

We got out first Akita puppy named Josie (brown brindle), on Dec. 26 of last year. She was shipped from AZ to Chicago, IL. Melissa covers all the details and has alot of knowledge on Akitas in general. She answers your email/text or phone calls right away. It really was a smooth process and Melissa was there every step of the way to answer the numerous questions I had since I hadn't had a dog for 15 yrs (and had not ever had a puppy)!
She certainly not only cares about her own dogs but very much cares about the welfare of the puppies and where they go. I send her pictures all the time now of Josie and I plan to do the same for Jake (very large pinto male, soon to join our family in March this year). Melissa is still there to offer me suggestions on potty training and behavioral/other training questions as Josie grows.
I very much recommend Melissa (and ADM) for an Akita puppy. She is very responsive to your questions and concerns, but most of all really loves these animals!

The first time we acquired puppies from you taught us something that can only be learned through experience. Akitas de MacLeod is by far, the best Akita breeder. Saiko is doing great and our existing Akitas not only tolerate her, but actually enjoy having her here. You’ve proven to us that Akitas from different ‘packs’ can get along very well when shown how to do so. We know that the way you love them and socialize them, directly impacts their behavior toward other dogs. This was a big issue for us, being we have a rather small house/yard and existing Akitas. Saiko is beautiful, happy and healthy. Without a doubt, we will be in touch with you for our next addition to our Akita family.
Thank you, Melissa and Charlie for sharing your knowledge and helping with all our ‘new puppy’ needs. Thank you, most of all for caring for your dogs as members of your family.Larry and Dawn Pavtis, Pennsylvania

I get up about 20 minutes early so I have time to spend with him before I go to work and then after work we go one walks. I play with him for about 3 hours and when 7:30 comes, he goes right into his bed and goes to sleep. Akitas de MacLeod has been a tremendous help in finding the newest member of our family! Prices are very reasonable considering all the time and love put into the puppies to get them ready for new homes. Akitas de Macleod is the only place I would recommend getting your Akita(s) from. I fell in love with the Akita breed after my first rescued male "Big Foot". A few years after he passed I was determined to find another Akita! After months of researching breeders throughout the states, Akitas de Macleod was by far the best I could find. I have recently just gotten my third pup from Melissa & Charlie and I was just as satisfied with the quality, love and health with this one as I was with my first. I can't say enough good things about Akitas de Macleod. Their Akitas have wonderful friendly behaviors, they are very well taken care of, fed the best food you can buy. They truly are a member of their family until they become a member of yours. Melissa will send you pictures of the pregnancy and the puppies as they grow week by week and even update you with a litter video on her YouTube web page. She does her best to stay in contact with her puppies throughout their lives, updating each litters' page with new pictures as they grow. The Macleods have a vast amount of knowledge when it comes to the Akita breed & Melissa is wonderful about answering any questions you may have day or night (and believe me, I've asked!). Which is a tremendous help if you are going through the numerous puppy stages for the first time. If you have any doubts I encourage you to visit her home and to see for yourself. They truly are wonderful dogs.

In the last year my family lost our two Akita mixed dogs, 16 and 13 due to old age. We loved our dogs so much, and knew we wanted to get a pure bred Akita this time. I started looking on the internet and found a couple of breeders. Melissa was the first breeder I talked to. I was very concern about her being in Arizona and me being in Canada. Melissa was full of information and really knew her stuff. My husband and I also talked with some another breeders that were closer to our home, but after talking with Melissa again we knew she was the breeder for us. You can just tell she loves her dogs.
Our whole experience was wonderful!! My family loved getting the pup updates by email. We all felt that we knew our puppy Kumo before we ever got him. Melissa was so helpful with helping me find the right puppy food and answering all my questions. When Kumo arrived he was everything we had hoped for. We couldn't be happier. I would recommend Akitas de Macleod to anyone, it's been a great journey. It was a true gift finding a breeder like Melissa and getting a puppy like Kumo...Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!

We have acquired a few puppies over the years, including a female Akita who is 11 years old now and empress of the house (and still going strong). As her best friend passed away several weeks ago, we decided it would be best to find her a new friend, and decided on another female Akita. I did a fair amount of research, and although based on previous experiences, I was leery of finding a puppy over the internet, I contacted a number of Akita breeders. Based on the web information the one that impressed me the most was Akitas de MacLeod. My son and I made the 3 hour drive down to meet with Melissa MacLeod and see her Akitas. We were impressed enough that we came home with a new pup, Kasha, the day before Christmas.
However, the story doesn’t end there. Melissa has since kept in close contact, checking almost daily to see how Kasha is doing, and just generally being very helpful in making suggestions that have been very helpful in making the puppy’s transition to a new home as easy as possible. Kasha and our other two dogs have adjusted incredibly well, and are chasing each other around as I write this. I couldn’t be happier with Kasha and our selection of an Akita from Melissa MacLeod. I would have no problem recommending Akitas de MacLeod to anyone looking for quality Akitas, from a truly caring breeder.

I am very happy. He is getting along very well with everyone. Still anxious with my dad but improving. I have had him around the shepherd for short time periods and they have done very well, even played a bit together. He is very comfortable with me and with my sister since she is often here. He took to my mom after a day or so. Doing better about my dad, less scared and more curious now. He stays out of his crate mostly unless I am in my bedroom and he figures he might as well nap there since it is in my room. Otherwise he stretches out in the living room or in the hallway on the tile where it is cooler. He is eating very well and no problems at all in the house. He is super! Star and Midnight are doing very well and we again thank you for these animals. They are very protective of Jessica and they enjoy every minute she plays with them. They have even gotten to where they will roll over onto their backs for her to rub their bellies. Star is a very mature dog and is calm and easy going unless she sees something she doesn't like. Midnight is very playful; he is always wanting to play and is sometimes too rough with Star so she will let him know real quick when he gets too rough. Star loves to just be petted and lay in my lap and Midnight just wants to lick you! He is starting to come into his maturity and is starting to try and show both females he is the head honcho here. He has accomplished this with Zoe but Star has a lot more fight in her before she gives in to anybody. These dogs are beautiful and very strong. Theresa had Star on a leash the other day and when she saw a cat she pulled Theresa down. Midnight is a little more easy when he feels you tug on the leash he stops pulling. They hunt very well together; I have gotten I don't know how many rabbits out of the yard that they have gotten a hold of. We do love these two and want to thank you for all you have done for us. Not many breeders will put forth the effort in finding their dogs a second or third home when the owners no longer want the dogs. Most people would tell the owners to do whatever they wanted with them and not worry about where the dogs ended up. You have to care a lot about these dogs to do what you have done for these two...

Hey Melissa, she is doing absolutely wonderful. She's growing ridiculously fast, it seems every day when I take her out, you can almost see how much bigger she is getting compared to all the other dogs here. She literally has about 40 or so dogs that she sees on a regular basis (no joke). Luckily, there are a handful of big shepherds and labs and even a husky that she can play with when she gets bigger.
She is completely potty trained, and on the weekends will sit my bed and howl at me to take her out (howl, not bark, it's hilarious). There are also about a thousand kids here, so she is getting used to having them just run up and grab her in the face. Without exception, anytime she sees a female (missing you I guess), she will take off and run straight towards them, which I -ahhh- encourage ;). She runs to and licks and all around loves on any person she sees.
She is doing great with all other dogs, except my moms 3 1/2 teacup poodle who she sees as a quick moving play toy. The only problem I have with her is she likes to sit on other dogs. She even crawled on top of this BIG chocolate lab and was sprawled across it's back. She even managed to stay on for a few feet when the lab stood up an tried to shake her off. I guess that is just Akita dominance coming out, not sure what to do about it except pull her off and tell her no.
All and all she is an absolute delight and I don't know how I ever lived without her. She is already known and loved by most here at my apartment, especially the women. Which again, I encourage :). I guess that's all I've got - I am typing this on my phone and putting no effort into grammar, correct puctuation or spelling.
Oh, by the way, she got over that whole doesn't like food' thing. She becomes an absolute idiot over a good treat now. Which is good for me, because 'good girl was only getting me so far. She even does a couple of tricks (sit, lay down, shake - sort of) but only when she wants to, treat or no. And her coat is coming in great, she is gonna be a gorgeous adult, just like her daddy :). Well anyway, I'll try and get you some real pictures here soon, I seem to have a hard time getting an actual camera. Thanks again for everything Melissa, I tell everyone who asks your website and talk you up. I think I even have a couple of people serious about contacting you!

Takara (Sumo X Toey) adopter says:
I lost my Akita in March of this year and debated whether or not to get another one. Akita’s are the kind of dogs that touch your soul, so once you have one, you have to have another. My motto about them is, I asked God to give me a best friend, and he gave me an Akita. I sent out letters to about a dozen different Akita breeders describing my unique situation, and Melissa was one of the first to reply. She called me and spoke to me for at least an hour, sharing her experience and knowledge of the breed and giving me hope that I could, indeed have another Akita. She gave me pointers and suggestions on what to look for when I chose the “right” breeder, she wasn’t selling herself, she was freely giving me information and truly sharing her wisdom. Other breeders did not reply, and some replied with negative comments, others with brief comments. I even had a few tell me that I should talk to this other breeder, who had multiple Akitas together successfully, and gave me Melissa’s information. I was very impressed with Melissa right away, and especially when I went through her website. It was obvious, that here was a woman who was raising Akitas because she truly loved the breed, and was doing it the “right” way. And what better reference can there be when you check out her “past pups” page and you find that most of her puppy homes have purchased multiple dogs from Akitas de MacLeod through the years.
The entire process of getting Takara was a journey with Melissa, and a true pleasure. She spent time explaining and re-explaining my multiple questions and concerns, never impatient at all. Each day when we would chat, we went through the process of watching the puppies grow from birth to 8 weeks old. Each day the excitement grew, with her sharing photos of the pups, each day sharing new moments that she had experienced with the pups so I would know about them. I was so excited to see my email “pupdates”. She never got frustrated with my questions, or my insecurities about bringing an Akita into my environment (dog day care and boarding facility). She was patient from the beginning always coming up with so much information to help me each and every step of the way. There was never a question I had, that she did not know the answer to regarding the breed. She has spent years doing her homework and research. She is one of the most knowledgeable, caring people I know. She loves this breed and only wants what is best for each and every puppy she has. She makes sure that each puppy is matched perfectly to its owner, ensuring happiness for both the dog and the owner. She is truly concerned with her pups way after she has been paid, they go to their new homes. This is not about money, this is truly an act of love on her part.
I took Takara to her vet visit today and the vet told me that Melissa was a very thorough breeder, and used high quality products with the puppies. Takara is truly a joy, a true “treasure” to us. We look forward to getting another pup from Akitas de MacLeod when the next litter is available. I would not hesitate for an instant to refer Melissa and Akitas de MacLeod to anyone who wants to purchase an Akita. Melissa made this entire process a loved filled event, and I feel blessed to have met her and to have her in my life, as I know, we will be lifelong friends.

The pups are doing good. Found a trainer in my town who everyone says is like the dog whisperer. Gonna contact him and get started. Used to be able to walk Suki off leash but she is not always mindful now particularly if she sees someone else out.
They swim with me daily. Bought them a baby pool but as far as I can tell, they are using it just as a giant water bowl. LOL
They are settling in nicely with each other and sleep voluntarily in the same open crate together.
I couldn't be happier and it appears, neither could they! :-)

picture coming soon....
From my first email with Melissa, I found her to be very passionate about Akitas. She made sure I knew everything I needed to know before I made up my mind. I decided to adopt two little bundles of joy. I ran into a few money sending issues (her American bank wouldn't accept my Canadian cheques) so I sent all of my payments in cash via regular mail. Melissa could have easily said that she never received the money and kept it for herself but she was very honest and emailed me as soon as she got it.
Once I had chosen which two furbabies I wanted, Melissa sent me pictures and personality updates or "pupdates" multiple times a week. Soon it was time for me to go get them at the airport. I am now the proud "Mommy" to two wonderful pups, Loki and Tundra.
I am very happy with the whole adoption process. My puppies are well socialized and are super affectionate. I will never get a dog from anywhere else and I am extremely proud to say that my dogs are from Akitas de MacLeod!

Kuma's (Cheeto X Koma) adopter says:
My husband and I were looking for an Akita puppy; we already have a 1 year old Akita female, so we wanted a male. I emailed Melissa and I received a call in less than an hour. I talked to her about getting a puppy, but was hesitant because she was 900 miles away and I would not get to see my puppy before I chose which one I wanted. I kept calling her back asking her more and more questions, she was very helpful every time and was not annoyed with my indecisiveness.
Finally we decided we wanted to purchase one of her puppies because she was so loving and caring towards all of her puppies and so kind and helpful to us. I looked at her website numerous times finding more and more useful information every time. After she sent me pictures of all the puppies, we picked our big boy Kuma and sent in our deposit.
She sent pictures almost every day and told me about him and how he was acting and let me know he was going to be a handful. She stayed in constant contact either by email or phone, and then finally the day was here when Kuma was to fly in.
She insisted I call immediately when I pick him up to let her know he was safe. I talked to her to minute I picked him up, she was so happy he was safe. She then called later that night to check on him again. The next day I received another call from her checking on Kuma and making sure I did not have any questions. This shows that she really cares about her puppies.
Kuma has only been with us for 2 days and we can already tell his temperament is wonderful and he loves to be around people and loves to be held. We recommend Akitas De Macleod to everyone who wants a wonderful Akita companion and a lifetime contact for information on Akitas (Melissa). We really appreciate all of your help and we will continue to send pictures and I am sure I will stay in contact because I will have many more questions. Thank You.

Hana (Tiamo X Mikita) and Dakota's (Duke X Sake) adopter says:
I went to Next Day Pets to get some referrals for Akita breeders. They gave me a list of 5 different breeders. I went to each website and I have got to tell you that out of the 5 breeder websites I checked out, none of them even came close to Akitas de MacLeod's website. The first four that I looked at seemed as if they were only there to sell puppies. When I got to the fifth one (Akitas de MacLeod) it was a whole different story. You could feel the care that Melissa has for her Akitas through the website. I emailed her about some concerns I had because we have two pugs. She wrote back to me within an hour and assured me that she had two pugs and no problems between the two breeds.
My intentions were to get just one Akita, but when I picked up Hana (our first akita) I had expressed interest in one of the white puppies and she brought him out to show him to me. Well, I fell in love with him. I told her that I would have to talk to my partner and let her know. Within that week, I sent her the money and one month later we picked up Dakota.
Melissa is the best. She really cares about her dogs and the people who get puppies from her. She is available anytime of the day or night if you need to talk to her about your puppy. Her knowledge about her dogs and their breed is amazing.

Kuma and Maiya's (Duke X Wicket) adopter says:
What can we say about Melissa and Akitas de Macleod that hasn’t already been said?
My husband and I found Melissa through NextDayPets. We emailed her inquiring about purchasing (2) puppies. We received a reply within a couple of hours. We already have two akitas – purchased from pet stores and were interested in having a diverse group of colors. Therefore, we had certain colors we were looking for. Melissa has several dogs that she uses for breeding and told us which ones made what color pups. She referred us to her website to look at their pictures for reference. She also told us which dogs she would be mating in the near future and which ones had already been mated and were expecting.
My husband and I chose both puppies from the same litter (Duke and Wicket) to get the colors we wanted. We fell in love with Duke and Wicket and during the pregnancy, decided to choose the puppies that looked most like their parents. Melissa kept us involved from the beginning. We received pictures of Wicket during the pregnancy and updates throughout. Not to mention, us emailing her just about everyday with some sort of question. She always responded the same day, even though she had
so many akitas to look after, was in the process of moving and did not have an internet connection at the time. To this day, I don’t know how she did it.
What amazed us the most was as soon as the first pup from the litter was born, she emailed us to let us know it was starting. Then, another email came after the second pup was born. Another after the third, and so on, until the final pup was born. She then emailed pictures of all the pups separately the same day. What more can you ask for in a breeder? She really made us feel involved and included in the excitement.
After picking our puppies, Melissa sent photos almost everyday showing their growth – which they do very quickly. When we say pictures, we mean she takes every pup and has backgrounds and different toys she poses them with. The boys are always with boy colors and toys. The girls are always with girl colors and toys. How she found time to do all that, I’ll never know. She must never sleep. It was nice to be able to see their growth from birth.
It is obvious that Melissa treats her dogs as members of her family, which is the main reason we decided to acquire our puppies from her. The way she talks about her dogs, you would think she was talking about her children. We feel the same way about our dogs. In the emails she had said that she makes scrambled eggs for her dogs. To compensate for the eggs, her and her husband own chickens and ducks. That’s a lot of eggs!
Our favorite moment throughout the whole process, was when Melissa had called and left a message on our machine about our Maiya (one of the puppies we bought from her). Apparently, Maiya was being a little rebel and Melissa called to let us know that she was going to be a handful. She said that Maiya had been in ‘timeout’ twice that day and while she was leaving the message on our machine, she was still correcting Maiya (she likes to “rough-house” with the other puppies). I called Melissa after listening to the message and Melissa took the time from her schedule to talk about how our puppies were behaving and doing. We talked for over an hour.
We received our puppies, both healthy and happy. Melissa had told us what to expect when we picked them up, so we were prepared with puppy food and scrambled eggs (in case they didn’t want the puppy food), wipes and towels (in case they made a mess), which they did. After wiping them off, we took them to a safe place so they could use the bathroom. They weren’t afraid of being held or having people touch their face or paws. They were very accustomed to being handled.
We have had Kuma and Maiya now for almost 3 weeks. They have adapted well and are almost completely potty trained. They are enjoying playing in the rain and in the grass in our yard, since they have seen neither. We couldn’t have asked for more beautiful, happy or healthy puppies.
Melissa, by far, you have exceeded both your requirements and our expectations. We can’t think of anything we would want you to change. If you have anyone who would like to contact us directly concerning our experience with you, please feel free to have them email us.
Thanks, Melissa!

My name is Ingrid Berger and I purchased a female Akita puppy from Akitas de MacLeod. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND that anyone looking to purchase an Akita, choose Akitas de MacLeod. The personal attention that you receive from the moment you choose your puppy is amazing and uncomparable. My husband and I were looking to purchase a female Akita as a companion to our male Akita. Through petfinder.com we were connected with Akitas de MacLeod.Melissa, who is now a trusted provider of any information about my dogs, contacted me promptly regarding the purchase of my lil (for now) Shadow who was born in February 2008. We had a particular color dog that we were looking for and Melissa guided me to the pair whose pups would come closest to our needs. I could not have been more happy with the colors of the parents, it was as if these dogs were waiting for us to find them.We got to follow the entire pregnancy of Shadow's mom. Once Shadow was born we received pictures almost every day. I would be excited to check my email just to see what new cute pictures Melissa had sent. It was as if we were part of the entire process even though Shadow was born over a thousand miles away. We saw her from before day 1 to eight weeks later when we picked her up from the airport.Melissa makes the whole process effortless. All that is required from you is to check your email and prepare for your puppy. Her website tells you EVERYTHING you could possibly want to know and if it's not there, then you can count on Melissa knowing. She thinks of everything. When I picked Shadow up from the airport, on the front of her crate was written "My Name is Shadow". I thought that was a great idea. It really makes the airline personnel take really good care of your puppy. When my husband told the personnel that he was looking for a puppy, everyone said "Who Shadow? We have her right here!" They had all connected with her because of that one thing. The good service does not end after you get you puppy. Melissa calls to check up on them and makes you feel confident that you can call her if you have any questions. Shadow was also practically house trained from day one. As long as we brought her directly outside upon waking or after playing, she had no accidents. By day two she would whine at the back door if she had to go out. This has been the best puppy buying experience that I have had. I am recommending Akitas de MacLeod very highly. I was so impressed that I plan on buying another puppy in a few months and guess what? Melissa has already recommended suitable companion parents for the future pup! Is that service or what?THANK YOU MELISSAPeace - Ingrid Berger, New Orleans, Lousiana
Bandit (Tiamo X Mikita)
Thoughts on Bandit: Oh man, he is sooo cool; what a personality! He learned to climb stairs, now we're working on going down. He'd stand at top crying so I'd have to carry him down. Between me and you, I think he's playing me. He just wants a free ride! I got him to walk very carefully 1/3 way down, with some snack enticement.
The kids next door adore him and vice versa. "It's nice to play with someone my own size." he thinks. I'm trying to convince their Mom to buy one of Bandits siblings, but to no avail; only a dirty look, LOL.
He's a huge hit at work! I mostly hear things like, "He's HOW old?" He's so people friendly, he warms up to everyone. He loves to roughhouse! I couldn't be happier! I think he feels likewise!!!Went to the vet today. He's like the Brad Pitt of Akitas. The women swoon over him.The tank weighed in at 18.4lbs. A guy walked in and said, "beautiful pup, how many monthsold is he?". When I said 9wks, the guy said OH-MY-GOD. We all laughed.Nothing phases Bandit- riding in my truck, (lays down in the back), going to vet (almost fellasleep on floor). AWESOME! You're gonna be sorry you let this guy go. He's a born star. Thanks Jeff

I'm the proud owner of two Akitas de Macleod pups, Takara and Shinji. Both animals are beautiful, intelligent creatures with such distinct personalities as to be more children than pets. I receive compliment upon compliment for them, both for their striking appearance and excellent, friendly demeanor. Despite Shinji's unfortunate bout with canine hip dysplasia, Melissa is very accomodating in honoring her gaurantee of the health of her pups. If the two I have didn't keep me busy enough, I'd happily add a third or a fourth pup to my happy pack.

Melissa and Charlie: Thank you for letting me visit your Akitas. I have been breeding and training Akitas for over 20 years and was very impressed with your Akitas. They are some of the nicest Akitas I have seen and are all happy and healthy and of nice size. Your handling of your dogs and caring hands for your puppies is something you should be proud of; I am!
The puppy I received from you, Yoda, is in excellent health and a playful bundle of joy. I am sure happy to bring her into my family so that we can love her for many years. It is really difficult to find a good breeder who gives the care to the pups that you do. I will be recommending you to everyone I know! Thank you for being a responsible breeder. It has been a pleasure working with you.

Someone who truly loves her dogs. The very first thing I noticed about Akitas de MacLeod was the amount of love that they have for the dogs. The first time I looked at their web site I was amazed at how happy, healthy and playful the dogs were. After reviewing several other breeder sites, I realized that Melissa is not "breeding" akitas, she is raising beloved friends. After talking with her, I knew I had found where I would get my pup, and the next one and the next! Every puppy I have gotten from her (3 so far) has been happy, healthy and an absolute joy. The last one even came already potty trained! That is how much time and love she puts into your (and my) future pets. I highly recommend her to anyone who wants, or thinks they want, an akita. I have also recommender her to others who are just looking for information on the breed as she knows more about akitas than many vets. By the way, she LOVES questions!

We thought Melissa was great because she was available & many breeders are not. We thought she was great because she sent us updates, photos & video on an almost daily basis. We thought she was great because she sent weekly weight updates & her puppies come micro-chipped. We thought she was great because she offered a civil service discount, & every little bit helps. We thought it was awesome that she passed along valuable information about, spaying, neutering, nutrition, behavior, medical issues, training a dominant dog, & daily household tips. The whole process, which for us was about 11 weeks (because we got 2 puppies), was a super duper experience. We had recently lost our dog & having the daily updates really helped fill the empty spot while we waited for our puppies to be ready to leave their respective mommies. We thought she rocked the whole way through. She was totally there for us EVERY time we needed or wanted to talk with her. We thought she was the best. But…. The proof my friends, is in the pudding. We are now the proud owners of the 2 best dogs ever to have existed since history has been recorded. All of the things that Melissa did that made us think she was so wonderful were phenomenal, but, our dogs are what make us certain that she is.

My husband and I lost our 13 y/o female Akita last May. We were heart broken as was our remaining pet, another Akita named Ichiban, 9 y/o. They loved each other for the past 9 years and she really 'raised' him or so my vet told me, along with our help of course. Dogs love other dogs in most circumstances. We were unsure when/if to buy another dog. Of course, we were in love with the Akita Breed . Their character, intelligence, protective, yet not vicious nature . They are not dogs who normally attack or harm. But they sure will scare away anyone wishing to come on to your property uninvited. They are also very devoted to their owners and love just being with you.
Anyway, we got all kinds of advice. "Don't get another one, he is too old and he will be jealous", "Get another Akita, he is too depressed alone". One night as I was surfing the internet for Akita puppies, I found Melissa's web site. I began to look it over, ask questions, and ironically, I had a Sake and Ichiban and so did she!!! Amazing. But more impressive was the obvious love and devotion she has for her animals. When we decided to purchase she was so helpful in so many ways. I got pictures every week until she was 8 weeks and time to put on the plane. I watched her grow. We became so attached just watching her on the many videos on You Tube and pictures she would send. And she is a protective breeder who wants to know what is going on with her puppies. I respect that and am happy to send her pictures and keep her informed. We received our furry baby via Delta on 10/27/07. Happy, healthy and I use a picture of her mom and dad as my screen saver :) I love going over her website and seeing the many happy families with their pups. I am trying hard to remember how much she loves her and keep her informed. And, if anything should happen (illness, etc.)she said she would even take her back to make sure she is always safe. I believe these dogs are her life and it is not an easy one. Fantastic Breeder!Barbara Dykes, Cantonment, Florida

I am writing another reference in regards to Akitas de MacLeod for two reasons. One, I would like to add more to my first reference, and two, I have received my second puppy from Melissa.
The pictures of her dogs do NOT do them justice. Duke, for example, is one of the most beautiful dogs I have ever seen and the pictures of him show a fraction of how gorgeous he really is. How lucky I was to be able to get one of his puppies! The videos and pictures also do not show how happy and healthy her dogs really are. She takes excellent care of them and after meeting her in person and getting to visit with her dogs I would be crazy to consider getting another dog from anyone else. Any time anyone even HINTS at getting another dog the first words out of my mouth are "Akitas de MacLeod". The obvious love she puts into each litter ensures they're happy, healthy, socialized puppies when they arrive to your home. If they grow up and aren't all of those things it's not because of her!
Yuki and Hatsu are in a word AWESOME. Great personalities, absolutely beautiful, healthy, happy, socialized puppies and anyone who has seen them is always impressed with them. Not surprising since they're impressive dogs. :-)
If you are considering getting two puppies please please please do it. They can keep each other company while you're gone, and it'll give them someone to grow old with. Yuki was so thrilled when Hatsu got here you could cut the excitement with a knife. Not only that, they'll both be getting out of the puppy stage at the same time, why do it twice when you can do it once?
All in all, I am extremely impressed with Melissa and her dogs and to consider getting one from anywhere else would be a huge mistake in my opinion. If you would like to see the puppies in action feel free to view my youtube page, www.youtube.com/user/belowzeroinak .Miranda Musich, Wasilla, Alaska

Hi Melissa:Sorry it took me a few days to get this to you, but I wanted to write a proper reference and put something thoughtful together so as to try to do justice to the wonderful service that you and Akitas de MacLeod provide. To whomever is considering using Akitas de MacLeod:DO NOT HESITATE!! If you are a conscientious dog owner/buyer and have researched all the things you are supposed to be looking for in a pure breed dog breeder (ie. knowledgeable about the breed and particulars about genetics and diseases associated, knows the parent's pedigree and openly shares that, pre-sells litters, only breeds one breed, interviews you, offers a health guarantee, etc.), then I say, look no further!!Melissa does all of this and more. When we were first looking for an Akita puppy, we looked on line and contacted a number of people who had puppies for sale, but when we put them to the test, they all came up short and we knew we would be sorry. Then we found Akitas de MacLeod and once we spoke with Melissa we knew we had found the right place! After the very first contact....at least a 1 hour phone call and thorough review of the website, we filled out the contract and sent in the deposit! Melissa called us while our puppies were being born and remained in constant contact for the next 8 weeks through emails, phone calls, pictures and videos so we could see our Hoshi growing up. I am thrilled to say we received a very happy, healthy, well socialized and adorable puppy! It is very obvious that Melissa is not only extremely knowledgeable about Akitas, but you can tell she truly loves her dogs and what she does. The things that most impressed me about Melissa and Akitas de MacLeod are the following:
- Responsible and knowledgeable breeder
- Superb customer service
- Extremely organized and detailed, no detail is too small
- Conscientious and very caring about her dogs...and your future pet!
- Gets to know you, you aren't just a customer, but you are a friend

I have been trying to write a reference so that everyone that reads it would not buy an Akita from anyone else; because that is how my husband and I feel. We were lucky enough to come across Melissa on Puppyfind, and after speaking to her for about two hours, we knew this is where we wanted to get our beloved pet. But, we or maybe I should say I, because the husband needing a little convincing, could not stop at one. The love, care and patience that Melissa puts into every litter was amazing. We signed up for two more. I was really determined to get litter mates and thankfully Mikita gave us that chance. Sasha and Mocha graced our home in the middle of March. Shortly after it became clear to me that I had bit off more than I could chew and could not give three dogs, seven kids, two high school borders and a husband all of my attention. Knowing I could not find the kids or the husband a new home, I once again called Melissa and asked her to just post Sasha as available on her website. Seeing the turmoil I was in, Sasha was scheduled on a plane back to Arizona the next day. Melissa never made me feel guilty, she just wants what is best for the pups. Thankfully Sasha was found a new home and will get the love and attention she deserves. While I am still trying to balance my life schedule, I know I am blessed with two beautiful dogs and a friend for life. If I could get one thing across to a reader of this reference, Melissa is the true thing. In today's world filled with greed, over-breeding, and dishonesty it is refreshing to come across someone who defines breeder not by the money the pup could bring but the love and joy the pup could bring to a family. You are not just getting a pup, you are getting a wealth of knowledge of the Akita breed and someone you can call at two in the morning because your baby puppy is breathing funny!! I promise you, you will not regret calling or adopting an Akita from Melissa. You might regret not calling her sooner.

As you know, life rarely turns out as we may hope, but things thankfully didn’t turn out as bad as they could have in my situation. When I decided to purchase an Akita over a year ago, I put a lot of thought and effort into deciding where I would buy the puppy, what life was going to be like with my dog, how I was going to spend time with him, and show him off to everyone! Unfortunately, soon after I got my puppy, my life veered off course, and all of the things that I had planned seemed to dissipate before my eyes. Eventually, even providing for the puppy’s basic needs became a challenge, and I began to feel extremely guilty about the life Saber was living due to my circumstances. In addition to the chaos in my life, I was also unexpectedly pregnant. Reluctantly, I considered having to find Saber a new home. I knew what had to be done, so after putting it off for several weeks, and changing my mind a dozen times, I knew it was best for Saber to live with somebody that could offer him a more stable situation and better companionship. I am very grateful that you were available to take him back with no hesitation, paying all the shipping costs, and even sending me payment for a dog that was already costing you money. It is rare to find someone who is upfront, honest, and kind. I will definitely give you glowing references to anyone who is looking to buy an Akita, and maybe one day, I will be lucky enough to own another one. I hope to keep in touch with you, and continue to keep up with Saber’s progress. Also, if you ever want to use me as a reference, feel free to have perspective buyers email me. I’ll give you a good word!
Thanks for everything,

To whomever is reading this note,
I am writing this note to let you all know how happy we are with our little Akita that we received from Melissa and Charlie MacLeod. We have had Akitas for the last 14 years and never have we been so happy with a new addition to our family as we are with our Daisy. Our children loved her from the moment they saw and her and we knew she would be great. She is the most precious little thing we could ask for. When she came to us she was easy going from the moment we got her. The second night she slept through except for twice did she get up needing to go on a potty break but other than that it was great.
We took her to the veterinarian on the third day that we had her for her first physical and vaccinations and they were so impressed with her. The vet told us that this is the first Akita that she had seen in a long time with such a great disposition and manners. She was an angel. The vet did say that she was going to be a big Akita and hoped that we had space for her. 8) She can't wait to see her again for her vaccinations and any future trips we might have.
We are so happy with her and my husband told me that if we ever need an Akita again we will definitely be coming back to the MacLeod's.

Melissa,
Thank you so much for our Akita. He is the most wonderful puppy. My baby girl has a best friend. He is so loyal and loving. We are so thrilled by our new furry bundle of joy. The Akita breed is the perfect dog for us. He barks only to protect us. He never needs a leash because he stays close all the time. We will be getting any friends for Aleka from you.
Thank you,

In any case, someone who has any interest in the breed, in learning how to raise & care for them, and didn't at least avail themselves of the resources you kindly provide gratis on your site is foolish. The fact that you put so much effort into educating the public, and following up with your buyers should be recommendation enough for anyone who takes this even slightly seriously. For folks like Diana & I, who are getting a companion to (among other things) train up for children, doing the groundwork & preparation are a very important part of the process - and you've been of invaluable assistance.
Besides - they're just astonishingly cute, and obviously very well cared for. Frankly, I'ld rather spend a little more money up front for healthy, well care for, puppy than 'buy cheap' and have a wee critter who is ill, mistreated, violently unsocialized, etc. Especially for folks considering pets for families with children - who wants to give a child a wonderful puppy, just to have the animal die? No, in some cases, quality (of breed and most importantly of care) definitely trumps price.James Pennell

Melissa,
I just want to say thank you so much for all your hard work and energy you spend raising your puppies... I couldn't be happier about choosing you as my breeder for my little girl... Deciding on a dog was a big decision for me resulting in many hours spent online researching breeds, and then where I would find my future puppy... When I came across Melissa's site, I must say I was very impressed. Her website is great... tons of helpful and honest information and GREAT pics of all the dogs. I especially enjoyed all the pics of the past pups and where they went. I could see that Melissa truly cared that her puppies went to loving families. I was particularly impressed when I met Melissa... When we pulled up to her house, she was outside on a blanket with the pup we were there to see (and eventually end up with). She was careful to keep the pup on the blanket (She never lets the puppies touch the ground outside to keep them protected against anything they could contract while their immune systems are developing). She didn’t even let us touch the puppy until we had used hand sanitizer! Being that I am an ICU nurse, I was very impressed. Throughout the entire process of picking our pup to finally bringing her home, it was obvious that Melissa is meticulous about everything. What she promises you in the contract, she truly means! She was dedicated in sending regular (at least weekly!) updates and pics, she is always available to answer any questions you might have. I e-mailed Melissa several times with questions; she was always so quick to respond… sometimes within minutes! And now that we finally have our puppy (Mika) at home, she has even called to see how she is adjusting to her new life. Anyway, like I said before, I couldn’t be happier with my decision to adopt from Melissa, I would recommend her to anyone who wants to provide a loving home to a puppy and she will be where I go again if I ever decided on another Akita pup!
Thanks again Melissa for everything! My experience in working with you couldn’t have been better!
PS: you have my permission to post any of our pics online, and don’t worry I will continue to send you more!Angela Ferguson, Phoenix, AZ
Sachi's (Tiamo X Mikita) adopter says:
I am a veterinarian in Sussex County, New Jersey, and I am eagerly anticipating the arrival of Sachi, our precious little boy!!! My husband and I recently lost our beloved Akita, Sargie. In an attempt to help fill the huge void he left in our hearts, I began searching the internet for an Akita breeder. I somehow stumbled upon Melissa's website, and was awstruck over the shear detail and immense information on her site!!! The pictures and references were amazing!!! We picked Sachi, and the rest in history!!!
I have always adopted rescues and never dealt with a breeder on a personal level. Being in the veterinary profession, I have dealt with their unique ways of doing things, their countless supplements, and their recommendations to new puppy owners. Melissa, however, is unique in that she exemplifies the true canine breeder. She breeds these dogs out of love and the willingness to continue improving the breed. She has thought of everything when breeding her dogs - from using a universal microchip, all the way to eye certifications. Most breeders will simply take your deposit, and in 8 weeks you may get a healthy puppy. With Melissa, these dogs have been meticulously screened for major health problems of the Akita, such as hip displasia, eye defects, and thyroid disease. The Akita is not a dog for every family, and Melissa is very attuned to educating people and determining if the puppies are going to the right home.
These puppies and her breeding animals are truly her life, and it shows in everything that she does. I particularly like the "pupdates" and pictures of the "furbabies"! I can't emphasize enough how detailed and thorough Melissa is. She even has a Japanese to English translator, and this is how we arrived at Sachi's name (Japanese for Happiness). She has even helped me get into the 21st century with her computer expertise. I never had an email account until I met her, and it was a necessity so that I could get my puppy updates. Melissa was very patient in helping me navigate the computer world, and now I can even email her pictures!!! Most of all, she is always there to assist, answer questions, or just listen. It's one thing to sell a dog to a person, but it is a whole other thing to make yourself available to people - it shows a lot about her loving, caring personality, and the dedication she has for her dogs!!!
I would highly recommend Melissa to any person looking for a high quality, loving Akita and even someone that is looking for breeding advice or other assistance. Scrap booking with the immense number of pictures and watching Sachi grow has helped put a smile on my face that has not been present since I lost my best friend - her furry gift is priceless, and the love and care that she showed to us will never be forgotten. It has been a privilege talking with her and discussing health related topics with her - it was like talking with a fellow colleague with her immense knowledge and experience!!! I only hope that she and Charlie have the energy to keep going so that I can adopt another puppy in the future!!! I look forward to sharing pictures and chats in the future with Melissa, as Sachi grows up and moves through his life! With Heartfelt gratitude,

Melissa thank you for everything that you have done. I firmly believe that you are one of the best breeders out there . Through my experience, it is clear that you truly love your puppies and you certainly know how to make owners feel at ease. Especially, during the waiting period by sending us pictures and links to videos of the the litter. The communication was smooth considering you ALWAYS replied back within 24 hours. ALWAYS! Ronin has been a great addition to the family and without a doubt, if I come to decide to get another Akita I will most certainly get one from you!
Thanks again!

Great Experience I am very, very happy with my "Suko". He is very intelligent and knows he is the answer. At only 3 months he is house broken, barks, ears are straight up and if he needs to go outside he lets me know. I recommend Akitas de Macleod "Highly" for a great breed. If I could handle two this would be the place to get them from. She is very particular about everything with the litters and you have to be serious to even apply....Thanks A.D.Macleod...From Les/Baltimore, Maryland

Grandparents to Sachi Brasch (Tiamo X Mikita) say:
Dear Melissa, Charlie and Family:Thanks for everything you are doing for Shelley and Steve and especially for the puppy. We all took it very very hard when Sergeant passed away & this is the best medicine for Shelley. We also had an Akita who lived up to 14 1/2 years. We now own an Alaskan Malamute who's a big knuckle head, but we love him all the same. Thanks for the pictures, it warms my day and my heart not just by looking at them but knowing that we'll soon have an addition to our family. Also knowing how much love and peace it gives our daughter. Love the web site!!!!!!... I'm a computer programmer, and I know when I see a nice site, and yours is great!... Thanks again for everything you are doing for Shelley, Steve and Sachi, we love the name and the pictures. Stay warm and keep up your wonderful work, for it is very very appreciated....Glenn, Cilla and "Thunderous Paws of Willowmenia" aka: Thumper

Parents of Akuto (Tiamo X Sisha):
Melissa just want to let you and Charlie know that Deb and I are so happy with Akuto. From the first time I got to hold him I fell in love. Actually I was the second one to hold him as Debbie pushed me out of the way to be the first to have eye contact with him. He loves her to death and is now starting to show me the same affection. He is very smart and loves to wrestle with me. We wrestle every night on his floor pillow. We call this our WWW Smack down wrestling event. I keep repeating to him "let's wrestle" and he attacks me. He will be very well taken care of. He enjoys being here I believe. He doesn’t cry or whimper. The only concern we have so far is Maddie has still not accepted him. She would never harm him but she ignores him and when he runs towards her she barks as if to say stay back. She is slowly starting to come to him and sniff but then turns quickly away. I feel she still does not understand what has happened to Kody and cannot figure out what this little guy is doing here. Also we have not forgotten the family portrait but we are waiting to be able to get Maddie close enough to him for a pose. We are taking Akuto this Fri for his shots and physical and to let our Vet and staff meet him. We have been with our Vet for 12 to 14 years. They are very good and have always taken good care of our babies. I am very happy we found you and your husband you have been wonderful. We will keep in contact with you to let you see Akuto grow as long as you would like. And please if you ever come back home come and spend some time with us. You will always be welcome in Akuto's home. And I am sure he would always remember you. Bye for now.

Lori Bloomer, owner of Anna that Tiamo studdedto twice, has this to say:
My breeding experience with Akitas de Macleod was very nice. Melissa was very knowledgeable and showed a real concern about my female. Melissa and Tiamo were willing to meet with me and my female many times. Tiamo was gentle with my female and was a good breeder.
Melissa stayed in touch thought out the pregnancy and has shown a concern regarding the puppies.

Future Puppy adopter says:
I talked to a breeder in California a couple of times prior to talking with you and she seemed very nice. I think it was ******* Akitas. She was the first to call back, but I hadn't run into your site yet, then when I did I started looking at your pictures and felt "the love" you had for your babies...and that is probably the biggest factor for me deciding. Someone from Oklahoma called me about the same time you did. She had one puppy left. She was nice, perhaps a little too pushy. She said she didn't breed very often. I think she had two Akitas and once or twice a year she might breed them. Plus, I didn't feel the connection with her as I do with you. Other breeders kept calling and sending emails to me as well, but after talking with you, emailing back and forth, seeing your overwhelming attention to your pups through your pictures, and how happy and healthy all of your dogs looked, your detail to care for your pups contract, microchip etc. etc., your detailed care and information for pups you gave to me, returning customers, the fact that you weren't into "show dogs" hooked me and I've been yours ever since. I think if most people found your website first and spoke with you first they would chose you over any other breeders out there for sure. You're the best. And it really is obvious once people see your pics and talk with you.
Dawn Wells, Dallas, TX and then she tells Puppyfind:
HEARTFELT & GENUINE, QUALITY BREEDER PLEASE don't make a decision unless you've talked with Melissa @ Akitas de MacLeod & visited her website including pictures, videos of her family of past & present Akitas. My 1st Akita of 9 yrs was purchased from nonquality breeder. My boy had overbreeding defects resulting in extensive medical care/cost. So, this time around I did my research. I talked to a breeder in CA, she was nice. Just not a heartfelt connection. I then viewed Melissa's site. When I did I saw her pictures & felt "the love" she had for her babies. This quality ultimately helped me make my decision. Other breeders called, but after talking w/ Melissa, seeing her overwhelming attention to pups via pictures, how happy & healthy ALL of her dogs look(ed), detail to pup care, contract, microchip, references, detailed care & info for the pups she continues to give, prompt contact, returning customers, the fact that she isn't into "show dogs" hooked me & I've been Melissa's ever since.

Cooper (Tiamo X Katana) and Kara (Tiamo X Tsunami) Spero's adopter says this after second adoption of Akitas de MacLeod pup:
In November 2006 we took in our first puppy from Akitas de MacLeod.
Before we even had her in our home, we were so impressed with Melissa's
care, knowledge, and experience with multiple Akitas that we decided to
welcome a second one. Cooper came home in January 2007 and since then
Cooper and Kara have been together constantly. Watching them grow has
been nothing short of amazing. The whole time Melissa has been in touch
through telephone, emails -- even videos up on youtube. She's always
been there to answer the many questions that have popped up as well as
helped with gauging food orders, vet visits, and all kinds of other
things. We could not have possibly been happier with the entire
experience from the initial questionnaire through taking them home and
all the fun that came after that. Akitas de MacLeod is one of the rare
breeders that has a genuine interest in the happiness and quality of her
puppies and we see that reflected in other adopter's as well as
ourselves. Thanks Melissa!

Koda's (Tiamo X Tsunami) adopter says:
Our experience with Akitas de MacLeod has been a pleasure. I feel like not only did we get a great new family member but we made a new friend as well.. Not only do Melissa and Charlie care and love the babies while they're in their home, they follow up on their little fur balls as well, and if you want my opinion I think they worry themselves sick the first few days. You have to watch Charlie though, he try's to hide them when you come to get them...;-)Well how we came to Akita de MacLeod: I had done all the necessary research and already had a Chow-Akita mix. She is 2 and is having some hip displasia problems already. I did not want to wait for her to get to stiff to handle a pup.. So the first breeder I came to was all about getting my NON REFUNDABLE deposit. She emailed me and even called me but once, but she got the money, I did not here from her again. I was so hurt not only did I lose the money but, we were heartbroken as we had waited 6 months to get a pup that was not coming. I then came across Melissa online. My husband was like: "Don't you ever learn?" I did not send a deposit right away because I was a little nervous. But I was at the time having problems getting My Kida girl to eat (my Chow-Akita mix). I had been emailing Melissa and we had talked on the phone. She had mentioned Flint River Ranch. I was a little skeptical but thought what the heck, what do I have to lose. We bought her the kibble and she loved it. She ate really well the fist two weeks or so and then kind of backed off a little. We then got her the Drywater and mixed it with the kibble. She just loved it and eats like a pig every meal. I never thought I would see her eat like that. Flint River Ranch is the only food for us. What a great food; my dogs love it and it comes right to the door. When the UPS mans comes she gets really exited!!!Well we had been getting pictures all this time of Mikita's pregnancy. When the babies were born I did not get my deposit to Melissa on time, so we had to wait..:-( If you are looking at getting a puppy DONT WAIT to put down the deposit... This is the real thing... I was a little bummed we did not get the baby that we wanted, but I did get my deposit in for the next litter. That would have been Sake's littler. Well poor little Sake lost everyone in her litter. (Her babies are on past pups by the way). We were so sad, But not two days later Tsunami had her babies. Well I had mine reserved and picked out before he was just a few days old. Melissa sent us pictures at every different stage and we literally got to watch him grow. He did nothing without her emailing me and letting me know. What an experience. I promise you can't go wrong adopting your baby from Akitas de MacLeod. That is how we came about our new little fur baby, Koda, that loves to eat my 7 yr. old's hair ties. I hope our story will help you in making your decision about choosing a breeder. Not only do they love their Akitas, they are very responsible breeders they are concerned about the health and welfare of ALL their Akitas...Thank you Melissa and Charlie for putting so much love and care into our sweet little boy... We wish all breeders could be like you..Sincerely.The DeSpain Family (928-651-0256), Morenci, AZKara's (Tsunami and Tiamo) adopter says:
Our first experience with Akitas de MacLeod was wonderful. Initially we
were slightly apprehensive because there was 900 miles between us but
the constant communication and updates quickly alleviated any concern.
Aside from being totally committed and engaged in the pups first weeks
of life, Melissa paid meticulous attention to their health and quickly
noticed when Kara's demeanor changed and then picked up on a limp. We
were immediately notified and kept up to speed with the vet visits. In
the end, it was just a simple sprain received most likely from
rough-housing with her siblings but Melissa's immediate concern
prevented it from becoming an untreated problem.
We are thrilled with our first Akita puppy and can't wait to bring home
a second in January from Katana-Tiamo!Keith and Renee Spero, Denver, CO

Melissa-
I sent along a picture of our first akita, the child with her is my oldest (who now is going to 11 next month). Katana and Tiamo's markings are similar.....I just don't think I could convince the family to wait past January :) We are all bubbling with excitement and all my kids check your website often. They love just looking at all your pictures. Thanks for having so many pictures for them to aaahhhh over! The love that you have for all your dogs shows through and I am very happy that we have you as our breeder. I did get the email about the food. When would be the right time to order and how long does it last? My fear is that with seven kids things get crazy and if I run low on the food and have to wait three days for it, then I would not want to upset the pups tummy with another dog food. Thanks again for answering all the questions!!Jill Shapiro, Chicago, IL
Jill also told Puppyfind.com:
A+ Breeder You will not find a better breeder. Never have I felt so comfortable with someone after only talking with them once. She went above and beyond all expectations. All papers were in order, and best of all she stayed in constant contact with me from day one. She sent pictures almost every other day and was there if I had any questions. Her web site had all the information I needed. I will return to Akitas De Macleod for all my Akita needs.

"I just looked at your breeders section and I think it is wonderful! It is all too true that people breed their dogs thinking they will make money, and so many individuals do breed their animals for the wrong reasons. I think that your new page illustrates that point well.... and the website as always is looking great! (It gets better every time you add something)...
Very cool Melissa....You're welcome, the compliments are just because the website truly is one of the most informative and best that I've found and the way you conduct business is also appreciated."

"I read your breeding info on your page and love it. I have to say normally I am "against" breeding due to all the horrors I've seen, and the fact that there are too many people out there who want to make a quick buck. Too bad they don't realize you actually lose a lot of money if you do it right. So I had to show your breeding page to some of my not so smart friends who wanted to breed two of their pits. It helped change their mind :)"
